Great title! This photo suggests to me that these chairs are very much like the elderly in our society that once served their "purpose" and now seen as broken and invaluable...cast aside and forgotten. This photo is very sad for that reason...especially since the chairs, much like the elderly, still have usefulness and vitality even if their colors are faded or their limbs weakened. Great photo! Thanks for sharing. :)

Thank you Trisha and Alec. I wanted to tell a story of two chairs as two persons, and accentuate the passage of time by the tall grass. The little one on the left is a typical chair of our island (Ile d'Orléans) not built elsewhere, and the other (a rocker) is a sort of mix betwen very rustic (the seat and legs) and a US style chair. Both are used in our house, which is also a bit "long in the beard". I transported them to an apple orchard of tall grass.

From a series done on local old chairs. Completely staged, for effect, by placing the

chairs in those interrelated positions in an orchard in late spring, in which the farmer

had yet to cut the grass, suggesting for me the passage of time.

Thanks Pierre, but my hat goes to you for pictures of "real" old folks, as in your Macedonian portrait portfolio.

Thank you for your comments, Liz and Jean-Marie.

The idea was to use symbols like old chairs and tall grass to evoke the thought of ancestors, but originally I was simply trying to find apple blossoms to photograph and these few spring flowers were the last that were left in the orchard at the end of the flowering period. I guess I learned something from that, though, that we have to be flexible when searching out photographs and I was lucky that the final visualisation worked out OK.

I can imagine their conversation in my head. The image makes me wonder just what have they seen in all their years and what a shame they can't speak any more than they do in the photo. Think of the conversations they supported. The worries, fears, joys and day to day living that passed around them. The image doesn't create the feeling of sadness in me. They seem very content and happy to be passing another afternnoon in each other's company. I really love this image - just great in every way -

Hi Mark. Thank you for your comments and your appreciation of what comes out of the image and relates to our lives. Two old friends, as you suggest, who have adapted to a lot of human presence in their time (and still are, as chairs amongst others in in our old country house near Quebec City). The ideas of time and timelessness are what also intrigue me in my photographic searches, and I was happy to find this overgrown little apple orchard to put down the two chairs in long grass, which evoked the question of time for me.
