michaellinder 16,613 Posted October 24, 2008 The cruise terminal on the left and the Quuen Mary 2 on the right - - Halifax, Novia Scotia. Please provide some feedback. It will help a poor, starving photographer. Link to comment
diego bardone 0 Posted October 24, 2008 Nice idea and good composition, it would have been better for the composition if the man had been close to you. Ciao! Diego Link to comment
deborahpeace 0 Posted October 24, 2008 Interesting. To me this image becomes, in it's simplest form, a look at windows, none of which we can see inside of. The many different shapes- circles, small squares, large squares and the repetition of these on down as far as we can see is really quite unique. I agree with the previous reviewer that I would have waited to have the man a bit closer. We can see that you, as photographer, are locked between these two walls, but it would have been more visually interesting with the man providing contrast to the otherwise very still environment. It looks like you had to deal with a rather tricky light environment. I think the dark might be a bit too dark in the foreground, and the highlights on the back boat are a bit too blown out for detail. But... there's not much you could have done about all that (at least not without shooting multiple shots then photoshoping). So, overall, intriguing image. Thanks for sharing! Deborah Link to comment
dimitaretch 0 Posted October 25, 2008 I do like the photo the way it is – the small figure emphasizes the tremendous size of the ship. It further contributes to the overall scale factor without drawing too much attention to itself. I also think the contrast between the dark areas and the bright parts of the ships contribute to the overall atmosphere of isolation (off hours) for the area. IMO this photo is a fine example of creative use of negatives and making them work for you. That in my book is called talent. Great photo! Congratulations! Regards, Dimitare Link to comment
wieslawmamon 0 Posted October 25, 2008 Interesting composition with lines leading to the centre of the image. I like the combination of the small round and square windows of the liner on the right and the larger rectangular ones of the building on the left. The little figure of the man (I'd prefer it to be a few steps closer) emphasizes the impressive dimensions of the ship. The tonality is really nice, thank you for sharing, regards, -wm Link to comment
michaellinder 16,613 Posted October 26, 2008 Thanks, everyone for your feedback. When I took this shot, I really was thinking primarily about the geometry and color contrast, and trying to capture the space between the building and the ship. The man on the pier wasn't a consideration. In retrospect, I would like to look at that element in the same way as Asian art typically depicts humans in landscapes - as rather inconspicuous. I do see how you interpret his role in the photo. I am very grateful that you took the time to look at this and to share your expertise with me. michael Link to comment
