I have posted the color version of this image and now the B&W. I am

torn between which I like better. What do you think?

The clouds and the overall feeling is excellent. I wonder if you could have made the trees, well "crispier"! Regards,

Although I love the color version, this one wins by a head. And I don't mind the tree on the left. I wonder if you'd be kind enough to give me another 'photography lesson'. Although I love this, there is a tone to the B&W that's greyish, as opposed to bluish. I find that this is often the criticism I have of B&W images, yet other people like this tone. So I'm trying to figure out what they're seeing that I'm not. Is it just a preference thing? I'm going to attach a version that I find more appealing, and if you have the time I'd like your opinions about why it does/does not work. Are you using the selenium on this one? I'm sorry for my very untechnical description of what I'm seeing, but I'm really trying to learn more about B&W, and I'm finding that I'm liking it more and more all the time. I'm sorry.....I won't keep bugging you, but I really value your opinion, and you know I think you're an extraordinary photographer!

My lesson is that if you are seeing this as gray or bluish you have monitor calibration problems. This image is toned with a Ektalure Cream which is sort of a brownish red to yellow tone. Ektalure Cream was a very popular warm tone paper made by Kodak that has been defunct for years. I have been able to duplicate the tone using the color balance adjustment layer. I have just recalibrated my monitors and they are right on the money. If you are serious about photography and want people to see you images the you processed them, then it is essential for you and your viewing audience to have your monitors calibrated. Calibration handles both the color and the contrast. I use EyeOne Match 3 which is an excellent product.

I like better the B&W version because I think the sky looks more dramatic this way. Awesome tones and great composition.

This is amazingly wonderful! I think that with all things being equal I do prefer the color version; but that this image does set up quite well for a black and white. Note to Christal; I second Leo's suggestion about monitor calibration. My monitor is recently calibrated too, and this is vintage Ektalure cream toning here with the subtle reds, yellows, and browns. Depending on your monitor type, it may require calibration 4-5 times per year. You will notice the difference too. Cheers! Chris

Yes, Leo, I did read your suggestion, and I've printed it out for future reference. Is EyeOne Match 3 something you just buy from the computer store, or can you download it? I have calibrated my monitor, but it would have been when I got the computer 3-4 years ago. And it was just using the system's own software.....I have a Dell. I didn't realize calibration had to be done periodically. Honestly, though, I don't think my monitor is too far off. I also have a MAC laptop, and I do have some trouble with colors looking right on it. When I go back and forth between computers I go crazy. Will this program you recommend calibrate each of my computers so they're consistent? And is it user friendly? I go into cold sweats when I think about loading new stuff onto my computer. Invariably I'll run into some snafu and get frustrated with my lack of computer skills. Norm isn't much better than me, I'm afraid. Anyway, thanks, as always, for your wonderful suggestions! You guys are the best!
