Hello Colton, Mr, Nicols is a great subject for a portrait and has a really intersting carving behind him. Your shot is OK but lacks something to make it a real good shot. I like the enviromental part he is intresting in his work with his surroundings. But first you have a little movement shake in the shot. then the top lefthand side is a little over exsposed.

I would shoot with a bit squicker time or from a tripod. I would change your composition a bit. The space behind him does nothing for the shot. The tools and carving are good. the bit to right is nothing.

Try a few diffent focal lenghts and positions, maybe move to the right a bit to and try to fit him and the carving and nothing else in the shot. Try a few portrait compositions as well. Don't forget your historygram to look for highlights and the whole feel of the shot.

Thank you so much Carl. This shot was taken without a flash, no tripod, in very low light. So I knew it wasn't going to be perfect but i'm happy with how it turned out. once I get the flash and tripod i'm deffinatly going to try this shot again.

Colton, Try this. When I look at the scene there is light its the neon at the top left.

When you stand nearly in front. the lights falling on the right side of face, But light is coming from the other side as well as its light. Set an ISO 800 program manual. Time 80sec and set Appeture F4. IF the shot is over exsposed increase the F 5.6, F8.0 ect. if under exsposed double the ISO 1600 or half the time. You will get a good natural light shot. The Flash is a good purchase. Regards Carl

Hello Colton:

I like the photograph just fine. My question is WHERE, (meaning country, state, city) was this taken? As an amature wood carver & amature photographer myself, I'd be interested in talking to Mr. Nichols & seeing more of his carvings. Thank you, in advance, for ANY time you may take to respond to this question. Have a great day!!
