I really like the softness you have achieved here with the colours and the lighting. This would strand well as a head and shoulder portrait. When you add in the rest of the scene you get an interesting street shot. The person in the restaurant facing the opposite way makes a nice foil. My only nit is that the image is out of level. When you have objects such as window frames or poles running off at an angle it makes me keep wanting to tilt my head.

Thank you Laurent for bringing me back to this one, as I had apparently forgotten to respond to Gordon after he left a comment. Gordon, after another couple of beers it will seem level. :) You are, of course right. I don't mind the boy at an angle, but I do agree that the pipe he is leaning back on, should have been vertical. This was just a grab shot that I don't believe he detected my taking. I was struck with the hair and the complexion of his face. He looked so cherubic. Obviously this one was not too well received, and perhaps rightfully so. I thank you gentleman for briefly pausing here and leaving a trace. Goodday to ya.

do you really think the rating of 4 people would mean anything to disminish my pleasure viewing an image ?...keep them coming as they say....

Dave; I've got too much snow to shovel at the moment but if I ever get finished digging out, I'll try that beer technique and let you know how it goes. Just for fun I leveled that pole and even without any extra space you may have had in the original file I could still use the same crop ratio and have the boy and the scene intact.

As for lack of attention, such are the vagaries of PN and the internet in general. Some things just slide by unnoticed and it is no reflection on the image. Other times very strong images get pounced upon by crazed packs of 3/3 raters and even more bizarrely, some truly hideous stuff that looks like it should be a velvet painting on a mirror selling for $ 19.99 at Wally Mart will garner 65, 7/7 ratings. I long ago gave up trying to cipher the ratings. I usually only ask for ratings on stuff of my own that I think is odd or pushing a boundary, of course this leaves me with plenty of low ratings but its more fun than asking for rating on safe stuff. My recent " dental visit " upload was one I was quite pleased with, nonetheless it got a whack of 3/3s and 4/4s. This told me that the appeal is clearly not universal, to say the least :-)

Jeff Long once suggested to me that low ratings are an indication that your photo wasn't easily digested. I love that sentiment, I mean who wants to put out pablum ?

This is a damn fine candid portrait my friend, don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

I didn't mean to sound plaintive or bitter about the response to this one. I'm not. Sometimes an image simply does not resonate with many people. That's okay. Not many of us hit home runs each time at the batter's box. I simply meant that Gord was the only one to comment prior to Laurent, and most of the time I am blessed with far more response (and mostly way more favorable than I deserve for that matter). The ratings? I love 'em. I've said it before, and I'll say it again. They are just fun and games. I don't use them for anything more than to get a laugh now and then. The people whose opinions I really value for the most part will not rate images. I do, because even though it is a small voice, I like to have my vote counted. Also, sometimes it is just plain fun to see what the voting public does. I don't take it personally, although more than once I would surely have loved to know who rated the way they did, just to get a sense of what they think is good. And that's one of the reasons I like the faves that Pnet installed. It is great fun to see what you guys have in your fave folders. I may not agree, but it tells me a lot about your artistic views.

So don't fear that I believe in ratings. Just know that I think they are fun. Like putting a quarter into a slot machine and pulling the lever. You never know what will happen.

Dave:

I did not think you were miffed about the ratings or lack of comment. I was just climbing up on my soapbox because I like the sound of my keyboard going clickity click.

Your reference to one armed bandits sums up what I was trying to say much better than I said it.

Glad you appreciated it. I honestly think it does apply in most cases. Although I could give you the names of a few folks that almost always manage huge numbers of rates and high ones at that. I remember one guy that post an inordinate number of sunrises/sunsets, had about fifty comments on a rather ordinary (but pretty) sunset, when one guy made kind of a negative comment about it being somewhat boring. The pack came after the dissenter. It was good fun to watch.

It would be cool if someone would come up with some software to make this digital keyboard sound like an 1940's Underwood typewriter. I would buy that in a heartbeat. I could sit here hammering away listening to the keys slice the air, waiting for the return carriage bell to ding, sort of like William Burroughs in Cronenburg's movie version of Naked Lunch. Minus the giant cockroach perhaps :-)

What a great idea. Nuts, but still...........I'd be willing to bet that there is such software out there somewhere. I'm thinking it's not selling really well. But that should not disturb Gordon Bowbrick. Not at all. :)

totally agree David & Gordon...apart from photography this is a social site (for good as well, no critique from me) and you observe all kinds of behaviour from good to bad, from 3's to mate, etc....but still it's a nice place to post and watch images....plus as a bonus debate and mate series is fun to watch (as an outsider) I also confess...
