billmccrystyn 0 Posted October 7, 2008 Nice image Niel. Your whites are correctly exposed and hold detail. The open mouth and eyes are well done. I only wish you could have got the whole bird in the frame. A little photoshop work would fix that. Link to comment

namurray 0 Posted October 7, 2008 Thanks Bill. Yes I was disappointed that I didn't quite get the bird's full wing span in the frame. Regards, Neil Link to comment

ron_west_photography 0 Posted January 9, 2009 Having worked in Cowes many years ago I know the beauty of Phillip Island, but the seal island, fairy penguin rookeries and shell museum can hold many more photographic treasures. The shot is excellent, pity we don't see the EXIF data to understand how you achieved such a fantastic shot, well done Link to comment
namurray 0 Posted January 12, 2009 Thanks very much indeed Ron. I agree about the photographic treasures at the locations you mention. Unfortunately I haven't been out and about enough lately to get any good shots. However, I always go down to the Nobbies in the gull breeding season and usually get a decent shot or two. This photo was more luck than good planning. I was walking along the boardwalk when this gull hovered above me squawking and diving at me. I had my 100-400 f4.5-5.6L lens on the EOS 1DMKIIN set at 100mm, aperture priority f4.5, ISO200 AI servo autofocus and evaluative metering. The sky behind the gull was cloudy but bright, hence the overexposure effect. I just pointed the camera at the gull as it hovered above me and kept shooting. This was the best of the bunch. I cropped a little bit off the left side of the original and I brightened the shot up to give an even higher key effect. Kind regards, Neil Link to comment
