ldavidson 4 Posted October 3, 2008 This is another amazing photo from you. I am confused; Brown Bears, Grizzly Bears, and Kodiak Bears all look similar. These look like Grizzly Bears to me, but they may all be the same species as Brown. In any case this is an impressive shot of two powerful animals. It looks like it is out of National Georgraphic. You were very brave to get so close to them. Link to comment
cromwell1664877587 0 Posted October 3, 2008 Thanks. Linda, from my understanding, grizzlies are brown bears that live in the interior and never eat salmon. Since they don't get that easy nonstop inflow of protein for an extended amount of time, they actually don't get as big as the brown bears that do eat salmon. I think the term grizzly is used pretty loosely though. They've been airing a show lately on the National Geographic Channel that is entitled "Grizzly Man Diaries", and they refer to the bears in it as grizzlies. Most, if not all of it, is shot in the same part of Alaska as this picture. I think some of it was actually shot in this exact spot, and these guys definitely were eating salmon. I'm assuming Kodiaks are just the brown bears that live on Kodiak Island about 40-50 miles east of where I shot this. Link to comment
