Foggy Bird Doggy

Matt Laur

Handheld, AF-S dynamic, 200mm, 1/1000, f/3.2, ISO 400, aperture priority. Lots of indirect light - I was surprised by the shuttter speed, here.

This pair were out for some early morning training in fields along the

Potomac River. A heavy fog kept the crop rows and planted cover nearly

invisible. Thanks for visiting.

the fog and consequent subdued colours create a wonderful atmosphere. Futhermore the anticipating stance of the hunter as well as the dog fit right in to create a very good photo.

Can't stop looking at this photo. Both man and dog seem to be so much united with the nature around. I love also the fact that the dog isn't bothered by the photographer, and just is doing his job here ;-)

Thanks, everyone. I simply can't resist settings and atmosphere like this. I get tired of unnecessarily high contrast and over saturated images (note to self: stop doing that!), and so a situation like this is nice because it demands that I honor the original mood. It's a good reminder to myself that not everyone who stops by to look at a photo only does so because the thumbnail version is bright and sparkly. Now, if I can just remember that for at least another 48 hours...

I like the atmospherics here, the wonderfully fog-muted grays and greens. There is action, but it's off camera, drawing the attention of both man and dog, creating a dynamic of unseen motion --- or expectation --- that borders on the humorous. Beautiful and fun.

I do like your point of view here about of maintain the originality, to be sincere I do have some regret with a couple images of mine by changing to much the light temperature and being unable to remember what time it was, on the real world, I also have thought about this point, what will the future generations know about real photography of now, almost every single picture on the magazines, newspaper are being manipulated to fulfill the commerce desire of showing and having only the perfect scenario, people being changed to have the perfect body and so on, maybe it is the time to start doing something different and go back to the past and do it more "honest" perhaps the word is too hard but that is what I feel sometimes. On the other hand if we are trying to sell and our concurrent do not think so, it is difficult to win the race, and when the race means bread on the table, to maintain the principles is a hard cross road, my question to myself and to whom will read this blab la of mine is:

Will photography of this modern Photoshop world of now be a trustful archive of the past to the next generations?

Thank you for start this reflection, and if you don’t like this comment fell free to delete.

Matt,

I love this image and feel your sentiments. I have recently moved back into film as a different approach to making photographs. For some reason, I am inclined to monkey with them a bit less. I am also recently drawn to more mid contrast images like this, rather than the glut of HDR monstrosities that fly around this site so frequently.

Man and dog, it doesn't get much better. I have two dogs and really can't imagine how I got by before them.

Cheers,

Jay
