I like this crop a lot, and I'm guessing it was cropped. :-)

If I may ask a general question, Doug. What is your goal with this and related series of photos? I'm asking because I just came from a visit to your "In the Station" series made decades ago which had an obvious sense of purpose in your approach.

it was cropped just a little.

The purpose was a) to get a pretty girl in front of my camera, b) to develop Brit's modeling portfolio, and c) to get more experience photographing pretty girls.

Several times during our session on the train tracks, freight trains

interrupted our progress by barrelling through the area we were shooting

in. In the distance, they were nothing more than a small, bright light

above the tracks, yet they required the greatest respect. In light of that,

what does this picture convey? What attitdues do you sense from Brit's

expression and/or posture? Are the elements within the frame properly

balanced? Thanks in advance for your comments.

Well done! Lovely model; fantastic expression; great depth use of a short depth of focus with the train light in the distance.

What is this girl thinking, one wonders?

She doesn't look afraid that a train is coming down the tracks. I love the expression and the way she is to the side of the frame. Well done!

( Very Beautiful)

Doug , please see my remarks on another posting of Brit - today or yesterday.

Same applies. If you didn't place a light back there, or scooch it in digitally - well, if there's actually a train approaching, for God's sake, tie her to the tracks.

Also, Doug, left a message on your portfolio page - I think it's number 15,124 - actually, it's the last one.

Like your response to the question of "theme". Reminds me of "why do you rob banks?"- " 'cause that's where the money is."

Why do we photograph pretty girls/women? Ummmmmm......

Actually, thematically, as I said in the other posting, I think Brit has turned to walk off into her future...and there's always a train coming, isn't there?

7/7 - You're very good at this stuff- damn it!

Kim and Robin, she is Super Brit! Unafraid of anything. :-)

Craig, yes, what more reasoning does one need? People at my day job look at me with great suspicion when I ask about making a portrait of them. Why, they ask, would I want a picture of them? What am I going to do with it, etc. Silly mortals. Don't they understand? Emerson said it well when he wrote that "Beauty is its own excuse for being". Well, I've given up on photographing civilians and am now photographing people who want to be photographed, who know they're beautiful and are willing to work with it. The rest of the world can just enjoy our results.

haha, actually, this photo kind of sums up my attitude in that regard. Damn the torpedoes, full steam ahead, except in this case, it's a train.

She seems to be calmed but only she knows what she was actually thinking....perhaps, hurrry up man, the train is coming, ha! :)

Good shot in bw....best regards!!!

Well, I'm glad to have asked the question. I too feel constricted in having to rationalize and justify intentions. Although to be fair, folks are well within reason to be hesitant (toward my amateur status), so treading lightly will continue to be the order of the day until I no longer feel the need to prove (or die waiting).

Thanks Jesus,

Mike, I turned 50 this year. My risk at this point is being labeled a dirty old man, and quite honestly, that's something I've always wanted to be. In a jovial manner, mind you, not in actuality. I don't know what the models are thinking when they're being photographed, probably whether or not they fed their cat, or turned out the lights of their apartment, or whatever, but there has to be a some kind of tension in my mind in order to do this. I've said to some that they have to allow me to fall in love with them through the viewfinder, but that it's not a permanent state of mind. Now that I'm old and almost ready for the pasture, I think I'm safe to keep shooting.

We'll see what happens when/if I venture into nudes.

And you know what else, for most of my life, I've been trying to be what other people think I should be, or what other people think I am. Maybe with my age I'm finally learning who I am and reaching more for who I want to be, rather than coasting along in the glass bottom boat of other people's expectations. I've wanted to photograph beautiful women since my first camera. In fact, the very first picture I made was the cute sales girl who sold it to me. Things didn't work out so well after that and here it is, 30 years later, and I'm finally getting my feet wet in this genre. Am I shallow for wanting to photograph pretty girls? Not in my opinion, although I know I'll get that label, among others, I'm sure, from people more willing to judge others not for who they are, but for who they would prefer them to be.

In some way, Doug, maybe it's a natural progression as we accumulate, reflect on, and internalize life experiences. 50 is good time. Better than 60 or 70 when such choices may not be an option.

IMHO.... Brit could stop a train! :-)

This one is a winner (too)! Wow, quite the model developing here. In one picture she looks like a cheerleader and in this one a sultry vixen. Those eyes......

Oh yes, your part is this was excellent also!

YES! that's it. Another expression might say: I'm through with this life. Or, I'm afraid, but she's too confident, too powerful. She WILL stop the train. She knows it, and we're becoming convinced of it!

Nice picture. I love the composition and her very sexy look back into the camera. And... I LOVE to read your prose on this page as well as the whole discussion...! :-)

B&W is also nice, but I do think this Girl's lovely skin is better in Color. All the same this is a great shot and it inspires many interesting thoughts. If she just stays on the tracks the Engineer will certainly stop the train for her.

Brit expresses very well with not just her face and eyes, but with her entire body. I may sound like I'm giving all credit to the model, but I do recognize the Photographers technical skill and artistic contribution to this team effort.
