whydangle 0 Posted September 12, 2008 Thanks for looking. A re-worked 35mm velvia scan at 16 bit. Two scans blended for increase of tonal range. Your thoughts are appreciated. Please click image for a Larger view. Link to comment

naturegirl99 0 Posted September 13, 2008 Stunning detail and tonal range! Lovely, Mark. May I ask what scanner you used? I am not at all happy with my current HP. Thanks, Nancy Link to comment

whydangle 0 Posted September 13, 2008 Thanks Jerry, Dave, Mike, Ali, Nancy and Gerolamo for your impressions. Nancy, I scan with a Canoscan 9900F from Canon (4years old). I actually don't know if they are still in production. It is a consumer grade flat-bed that works well enough (it utilizes a film adaptor), but as you can see from my tech notes, I usually have to blend two scans from different settings to render shadow detail and preserve highlight information. As far as resolution, I am making scans of 100megs from 35mm at 8bit, but I utilize 16 bit at twice the size for more processing control. I would not recommend this scanner for someone who is serious about photography. A dedicated film scanner, not a flat-bed, will provide better digital files hands down. At the same time, I have printed 24inchX36inch prints from these scans with darn good results. For me, rather than upgrading to a new scanner, I will probably take my very best slides and have them professionally Drum Scanned. I am talking perhaps my best 15 slides. All the rest will be happy as scans from my current model. The balance of my work is from a digital SLR. Good luck! Link to comment
jeff.grant 0 Posted September 14, 2008 Mark, this is beautiful. I normally run a mile from the wide angle close up landscape type of shot but this goes far beyond that. The balance of bright sky top LHS against the rhododendrons is excellent as is the play of light over the whole scene. Link to comment
ryourth 0 Posted September 14, 2008 As usual Mark your control of the lighting is exceptional.Like the manner the background is low toned to keep the eyes on thr beautiful foreground. Regards-Ross Link to comment
whydangle 0 Posted September 14, 2008 Thanks Stefano, Jeff and Ross. This was a memorable evening. It all came together so well. I only wish I had my digital back then, but it would require some additional PP to give the RAW a velvia look. Link to comment
anish 0 Posted September 15, 2008 Simply gorgeous light. The exposure couldn't be any better, and the composition is nicely balanced. Very well done. Anish Link to comment

whydangle 0 Posted September 15, 2008 Thanks Anish, Gary and Leo. This was shot in 2005, a little over one month before we moved to Raleigh from Hendersonville. That was a heartbreaking move considering we were so close to these mountains. I always like to return to a place that I know will produce, and I still want to come back here one day during the same time for another go round! Link to comment
thadley 15 Posted September 18, 2008 A wonderful image that has been expertly captured. thanks for the info re the scans. I have so many Kodachrome but mostly velvia slides that have been sadly neglected. Oops - almost forgot that i also have some 645 velvia slides. I have to go back and decide which of my 15 to have drum scanned even though I have a canon FS4000US 35mm film scanner. Link to comment
