I have the same reaction to this as the shot posted today of an interesting Korean sundial. Which is that I would really love to have some scale of size in the photo. In a real sense, Chris, this is an image of archeological interest, as well as a composition. As a composition it is a found study...which has nice shadows and interesting textures like the floor and the different colors-one almost looks like metal. I am trying to think of some scale item to include that would be interesting. Hard. Perhaps a walking stick leaning against the back wall. That kind of thing.

Incidentally, this made me think of my poor German Shepherd who just had a cystotomy and the vet gave me a sample of about a dozen stones from his bladder. If I did a macro shot...naw I don't think it would be that exciting. Seriously, I hope you can next time take along something to show scale of the balls. And I am not wild about the black bar frame. How about trying a black trapezoidal frame to emphasize the depth. Worth a shot. Lucky you to travel to exotic historic places. I wish you well, Christine. gs

Thank you for your comments. El, It is really the coincidence that we posted this similar photo the same day.

This scene fascinated me. Indeed, these balls were placed so that we could not see them, as if we wanted to hide something in this castle; a mystery. The biggest stone balls make approximately 40 cms in diameter. Some of them are in metal. They were thrown down from the walls of the castle.

Thanks Gerry for your advice. Effectively the scale misses for the understanding of this image. We could imagine that it is stone bladder in large-scale. It leaves many place with the imagination. Is not it the purpose of a photo? :)

interesting well captured and textured photograph. Maybe these "nuts" have been produced for feeding cannons or catapults in ancient times? best regards - steffen
