Another image in the ongoing series of " drive-by shootings "

Please do not hesitate to be brutally honest. I value all feedback and

my skin is thicker than a possum's :-)

It's unbelievable yet not unexpected that this shot would garner such low ratings in comparison to some of your higher rated landscapes. And why?

I see this as a photograph representing all of us who take a risk. Rather than coloring inside the lines, we make a mad creative dash across the road. And look what happens. Splat.

While this is a picture of an unfortunate end, the picture is so much more. Framed as it is and including such delicious motion, this is a hopeful shot. The little guy almost made it. And the world is urging him to keep moving. Did he give up? Did he decide the risk was too great and then fling himself into oncoming traffic? Or was this a valiant effort of a creature intent on experiencing the new and trying on the other side of the road for size?

I see the latter.

I gave this a sincere 7/7 not because ratings mean anything, although my 7/7 means something to me. It's a damn good photo both visually and creatively. As they say, don't cast your pearls before swine, they'll run you over.

So what?

As the chicken discovered, there is only one way to find out what's on the other side of the road.

Or as Neil Young deduced ' its better to go splat than to fade away '

I like this image and that is good enough for me. Trying to get a good shot of roadkill worked into my drive-by series has been a goal for some time and turned out to be more challenging than I originally thought it would be.

That this image has impact for you and you have shared your thoughts is all that matters regarding its sojourn at P.Nut. I am grateful for your interpretation. I love your take on this . Coming from any other person optimism from road kill would seem a stretch, from you it seems as easy as breathing. I honestly do not know what motivates me to post at P.Nut but I do know that it has something to do with getting honest and useful feedback such as you so often take the time to offer.

For some time now I have not bothered to run anything through the critique forum. I recently read that management has altered the way images pass through the forum and I became curious about any impact that may have. I may run a few more through yet, as I have not gotten any sense that things have altered, post change. I also wanted to post this on the heels of a sunset shot, sunset = good / roadkill = bad is not any kind of surprise. The numbers are downright amusing! if they weren't amusing, I would check that box to disallow them.

Are you sure this is a chicken? It looks like a Platypus to me - prehistoric roadkill : )

Another great addition to your series!!!

The only thing that detracts from the overall effect for me is the vertical streak that extends to the top right corner - oddly, it looks like a film processing streak.

Fun capture!!!

I am not at all certain about the ID of this poor run over critter. At 60mph on the highway it went by too fast to be certain of much. In the photo I thought it looked like an opossum although I don't think they live this far north. Now that you mention it it does look like a platypus.

Having shot the surface of the highway quite a bit, I am fairly certain that the streak is a tire skid mark on the asphalt and yeah I agree it would have been nice if it was not there.

Risk taking and experimentation........what more is there to ask but to see boldness and inventiveness on this place; I for one have rather see thousand of daring images trying to brake or establish some new boundaries, that to see a couple of perfectly taken photographs. To me that is what this site is all about, the reason I'm attracted to it, and the reason why I'm so drawn to your work, Gordon.

Thank you.

I came back to this photo. It is so dramatic, in showing the speed and the thin line between life and death, and how our decisions are affecting our life. It is a much more a saying and thought provoking than just a photograph. The technic is outstanding , the upper yellow line and the lower dark FG are adding to the whole. Very unusual work that I missed before.
