Sonia, I have selected a photo to contribute a negative critique on purpose; I have only recently registered at this forum, and wherever I look, I see back-patting comments that often do not add any value. Therefore, even though I like many of your other photos very much (especially those of people, your plays with shadows and reflections -- they show so much that photography is not the only art you practice), I decided to add a comment to one that I do not like very much.

In my opinion, the contrast is much too high here. The stone/log (?) has practically invisible details, and has turned into a solid with no meaning. The sky, on the other hand, has bleaked out, which gives the impression that the mountains are "bitten out" or "torn out" of it in an unpleasant way. I bet it was not your intention. The look of the sky is much better in the water; the use of gradient filter (pre- or post-processing) would add much to this photograph.

But the composition is a bit awkward, too. The stone/log is in the expected position of the "golden rule", but the mountains are not; they are in the center, which makes one look for something in the left part of the picture... but there is nothing there to catch our eye.

Moreover, uploading 2 versions of the same picture (you do it from time to time, as I can see) results in both of them completely losing the impact. I think it is best to decide before uploading, leave the selected photos for at least a couple of days to "sink in", and only then upload. One has much stronger impact than two.

Sonia, it wasn't a bad idea... but the realization leaves me some doubts... I should have preferred less contrast and the shadows not so dark/deep, especially on the stone in front. It's just my humble opinion ;-) Regards. Sergio

Thank you Adam and Sergio. I really really appreciate your comments. As I have said on my profile, I have a hard time deciding what I do not like about a photo and how to correct it. I think that is why, on occation, I upload more than one version of the same photo, to see what is best in the opinion of others. As I learn I will better be able to decide what creates the most desirable image. The "back-patters" can be wonderful but create an illusion of perfection when there is so much improvement to be made. Thank you again for sharing your experience and opinions.
