Hallway Piano

Matt Laur

Handheld, AF-S dynamic, 1/3rd second, f/.6, ISO 500, aperture priority, matrix metering. VR set to "normal" - and without VR, this third-of-a-second handheld shot would have been very difficult.

This pianist had the stamina to play all evening at a local photography

exhibit. Real music to accompany real prints hanging on the wall.

Thanks for visiting, and for your comments.

well it's pretty obvious isn't it. The way you repeat those keystrokes over and over again is pretty impressive. I could imagine you bending backwards to get it. More importantly however you saw it. Getting the movement of those hands tops it off. Must have been somewhat difficult lighting conditions. I think this really swings in more than one way.

Good exhibit as well?

Thanks, Ton. It's always nice when someone sees what I saw. The light was indeed terrible - that was a 1/3-second exposure (VR to the rescue, since I needed to stop down some for anything close to a likeable DoF, given what I was trying to accomplish with the repeating patterns - and balancing on the stairs where people were milling around didn't lend itself to a tripod, that's for sure).

The exhibition itself was quite enjoyable. Six local photographers, juried into the show by the City of Gaithersburg's arts program, and I stopped by on the evening that they were holding a reception for the show. It was held at an historical mansion that has been converted to a space that's ideal for this sort of thing, and is popular for weddings and meetings. I noticed that fellow photo-netter Vincent Stanford had some of his Potomac Gorge Project images and other regional work in the mix. Always good to see some work actually wind up on paper.

that's a high-class location. You're right though about the prints. It's always good to remember that a really detailed review needs a print rather than a image on screen. On the other hand it's great that this way we get to share with photographers from all over the world. Thanks for the extra uploads

What I love most about this photo is the diagonal composition of the stairs and how they echo the rhythm of a piano. Very original viewpoint.

Interesting point of view Matt, makes a special composition. The triangle form around the pianist, the echo of the bars," rhymed " with the paino and note is unique. Very well observed, and different.

This is a very geometrical shot with good contrast that communicates the atmosphere of the occasion. It tells a story of an accomplished pianist. The lighting conditions were subdued and you did a great job of capturing the detail and texture. Fine work.

BTW, thank you for the pointer to the Potomac Gorge Project. I enjoyed the show and I am happy to hear that you did also.

Love this, Matt, especially the high contrast with the preserved midtones of the wood. Nicely seen and exposed. Cheers, Jay

I love how you captured the movement of the hands contained within the stillness of the staircase. Very interesting lines and shadows too; it all makes for a very well seen image! Thank you for sharing! :)
