Like the way you used those harsh shadows in the bottom, it amplifies more that upper section. Almost the way that lost your title in there first. Well done Jeff. Warm rgs Tero.

The lighting is great. There's a bit of theater, a bit sinister or a touch of danger with the smoke atop the fire escape, or is this another one of your clouds? The sign adds voyeuristic irony.

The puff of steam at the top really adds some interest to the image, mostly because we cannot determine where it is coming from. And as far as the TRESPASSING goes... I would never consider it! 8~)#

This is like a scene from a German expressionist film of the 20's or 30's. The building looms up in our path, all hard angles and deep shadows. A shiver passes through us; the steps could lead to a gallows.

This print suggests so much to me, like a Weegee snapshot, a portrait of a time and place long gone, and existing only in the memories of those who lived through it. I can hear the children screaming in the rooms, the cars screeching by, and the shrill whistle of a policeman, a second before a shot rings out, then the loud siren of, well sirens, as they rush the unfortunate youth to the hospital, while the crowd gathers in glee in the dark alley, watching unfold just another evening in their lives.

It is a B/W Jeff, but for me it represent the brown brick houses that were my impression comming the first time to NY. It looks exactly as I remember it. with the bars ,ladders, and height, and even the smoke ....it is a very interesting angle, the light and shadows of floors as dispersed on the frame, is so well observed, demonstrating the construction.It looks as an emegency exite....The sign is also typically ( "don't disturb our privacy"....) ,as one of my memories and impressions there.( I think it will be interesting in color as well).

Great shot in difficult light conditions...and besides that there is a geometric continuity that visualy conducts the viewer throughout your image...

Great capture - the movement, mood, and twist with the cloud all invite and warn against a trespass; fascinating metaphor.

there a cinema (as Jack said) feel to it...a tension that something will happen...from the "no trepassing sign below" up to the smoke... the eye travels the scene waiting for action or the starting point of a travelling that moves the viewer to it....an atmosphere image....really nice.....

Bold, foreboding, straight forward with a no nonsense feel to it. The light from the top going to darkness at the bottom makes me want to ascend the stairs to seek it out and remove myself from the oppressive and frightening shadows. I like the tilted angle as if I'm viewing with my head cocked to the side. I'm going to take that shaft on the right and ride it straight out of the picture to more hospitable places.

Donna: The original scene was quite lively and colorful, but I tried to make this mysterious by dimming the scene and adding the clouds/smoke.

As apposed to the standard, garden variety, non-absolute trespassing ?

 

The interplay of light and shadow as well as the multitude of textures add to an rich composition. That little piece of wire is the icing on the cake!

 

I love that your style is so wild and loosely defined at the same time as being recognizable and distinct. I'm still not sure how that happens, but I'm taking notes :-)

 

I like the smoke, gives indeed a mysterious mood..but why such a complete interdiction? what kind of secrets are hidden there? Excellent moody b/w composition!

I would never thought of trespassing at this place. Look forbidden with its height. Well chosen angle with clever play of light & shadow.

Great composition, it’s obvious that you took great care into doing a very precise framing of the stairs, achieving something wonderful with all the lines in it. But what I enjoy most of all, is the patch of light on the bricks at the upper left corner. Terrific job, congratulations!

Nicely done with B&W and great mood set with the angles and light. I also like the trail of smoke, it makes this a mysterous and dangerous palce. Trespassing would be out of the question, just walk away.
