amalsircar 2 Posted August 26, 2008 Very good street-photography,Pnina.Your cropping & choice of tone is admirable. Is he up for sale with other items in the background? There is pathos in the old man's body language. Link to comment

pnital 36 Posted August 26, 2008 All of you for your feedback. Amal, it touched me seeing him like this, not a joyfull old age. Jim, thank ! I see it is a compliment, but I don't think Ansel A. will agree to the analogy, His work and reputation is way beyond me.....anyway, thanks for thinking it. Stephen, we wrote simultaneously, thanks for your visit and feedback. Link to comment

katzpjs 50 Posted August 27, 2008 I'm sure that someday I will become the subject of such photos, but in the meantime I'll try to stay hidden behind the camera and not be seen in front of it. Nice shot. Link to comment

godfather 0 Posted August 27, 2008 Like the compo. It is a sad shot even though i can't be 100% sure, that is the fellow a homeless or just dude enjoying his last Carlsberg for the day. But still i think it's a quite powerful image and raises emotions. Well done. Link to comment
Donna Stavis 0 Posted August 27, 2008 Completely delightful shot. He wears his tallit katan casually, comfortable. The tones are nice. The atmosphere---- wonderful, and I love the gaggle of wooden male dolls hanging out together on our left. There's harmony in this chaos. Link to comment
dominiquedodge 0 Posted August 27, 2008 Great shot. Although the compsoition is centered, it feels works well. The background details add interest, except perhaps for the slightly bright rectangle at top. I wonder what the hand-in-the-bag is about to pull out. I'm not getting feelings of sadness or lonliness, but this fellow looks drowsy. Link to comment
pnital 36 Posted August 27, 2008 Tero, thanks for your comments, I don't think he is a homeless, still he evokes sad feelings of old age. Donna, it was a surprise to me to see him with the tallit katan, not so usual.. busy surrounding, and the funny irony, that the wooden male dolls behind him are looking Hasidic..... Michael, nice to see you again, thanks Dominique, , what a surprise! A lovely one! Are you missing PN? I have never left here ,I like it better than the other side I keep ONE only....I hope to see you more .Thanks for the nice critique. Vladimir, nice to see you again, thanks for all of them! Guest Guest Posted August 27, 2008 It's a compelling photo, somewhat ambiguous to me. The composition gives it an air of strength, him being so centered and staid, the focus being so sure and certain. The black and white conversion is simple and direct, straightforward. This is just the type of photo that will elicit all kinds of interesting projections yet we, as viewers, will never really know what the story is or what to make of this man. His expression is pretty much hidden by his beard and his hat. He could be forlorn, half asleep, deep in thought. He could be the proprietor of the street shop behind him or a street person or simply waiting for a bus. He could just have bought his coffee and already finished his donut or he could have been given the coffee by a generous stranger. This has that Sontag feeling of voyeurism to me, disengagement, distance, yet inquisitive and tempted. This could convey anything from pathos to sleepiness. It does seem to convey a sense of calm and quiet, no movement, no strong shadows or highlights. Likely a gray day. "it touched me seeing him like this, not a joyfull old age." I was surprised reading that. I didn't get any sorrow on your part from this. Interesting that Donna refers to it as delightful. Extremely different reactions. Link to comment
pnital 36 Posted August 27, 2008 Thanks for your interesting comment. It was photographed in a square entering two markets one near the other ( Carmel market , well known in the city) it is one of the most active, animated, noisy place. I visit this place from time to time, as it has a very interesting human activity, many of my street photos are from that square and area. I don't know why, but he looked so detached from all the noise and activity around, looked sleeping, bizarre in his tallit katan ( small praying shawl) so unusual. He looked a bit neglected forlorn, old and vulnerable to me, and I felt sad somehow. You are right that it is a bit enigmatic, I was in this square and around for quite sometime, I was following him as he touched me , he did not move, his L hand in his bag, like a stopped action in the middle. "This has that Sontag feeling of voyeurism to me, disengagement, distance, yet inquisitive and tempted. " I liked it Fred, it is so accurate and describes well my feelings. I wanted to try and talk to him, but I could not disturb him,as he was simply not there, and still very present for me. Interesting that it has evoked such different feeling from viewers. .I have another older man from that session, that I see every time I visit that place, he interested me also, and I will soon upload his photo . celasun 0 Posted August 28, 2008 I have looked at this photo; disected & inspected it repeatedly for such a long time that it might have become -sort of- mine! I am still trying to understand the recipe by tasting it! A very good mix of spices, for sure :)Regards, Link to comment
