Eastern Wood-Pewee on Perch

greglyon

This photo taken using tripod mounted 500 f4+tc14e+36mm extension tube. Mid-day bright sunlight. PhotoShop: Some cropping, levels (and levels mask) and unsharp mask. Thanks to Sean Noonan for the help with bird ID. These small birds present quite a fun challenge with a Manual Focus lens, they rarely sit still more than a second or two.

I cannot decide about the out of focus branch to the right of the

bird. It's kind of interesting, yet distracting from the main

subject. If I crop it out I think it leaves the bird too close to

the edge, and looking off that side too. Also, if you know what type

this is please let me know. (See tech details for more info.)

I think it's better to leave it as is. Cropping the right part (with the blurred branch) will place the right-looking bird at the right half of the photo.

The two branches create a nice frame.

I like this photo very much.

I do not think that you should crop this photo any closer. The vertical line is enough out of focus that is does not distract. It does serve as a framing element, and breaks up the rather bland background. The focus of the photo also serves to direct the eye to the bird. The perch obviously fades from focus on both the left and right of the bird. This constricts the vieion to the subject. Nice portrait.

Thanks for the comments everyone, I'll leave this one as is! And thanks Sean for the ID. I have to agree, it's an eastern wood-pewee.

Also, if you're a bird fan definitely follow the link to Sean's site. He's got some great photos on his website!
