Karl Schuler 48 Posted August 22, 2008 A crater mountain and lava streams close to the Tsagaan lake inwestern Mongolia are evidence of quite recent volcanic activities. I shot this photo from the crater edge with self-timer, while holdingthe camera on the tripod, stretched as much as possible over myhead. Thanks for freedback and rating. Karl Link to comment
mike_dial 1 Posted August 23, 2008 True, the crate draws attention to itself, but your taking a high perspective draws my eye immediately to the black hole at the bottom. I also like the contrast with the beautiful landscape in the background. Link to comment
katzpjs 50 Posted August 23, 2008 I am familiar with shooting blind using a 5D but I've never done it with a tripod before. How my tries did it take you to get it right? Link to comment
Karl Schuler 48 Posted August 23, 2008 Thanks Mike for your comment. Yes, the landscape in the background is a world apart which mertis attention.Shawn, this is one of about 40 shots from different locations around the crater edge. By the way, I used the same technique for my Euro 08 photo with the orange crowd in front of the Parliament Building in Berne. There I shot over the fence as I was not allowed to enter the Fan-Zone with my camera ;-). Karl Link to comment

bogdan_nicolescu 8 Posted October 16, 2008 Intriguing picture Karl, it doesn't make much sense to me from geological perspective... it doesn't look like a volcanic crater to me... anyway, sure is a nice pic indeed... Link to comment
Karl Schuler 48 Posted October 16, 2008 it looks more sucking than exploding? Perhaps what we have diffiuculties to see on this photo is that we are on the top of a crater mountain. The greenish bluish plain is more down in the valley, which is covered by a large lava stream. The edge of the crater is just a thin line. The horizon line indicates that we are at the same elevation as the top of the left mountain in front of the lake. Link to comment
