LenMarriott 9 Posted August 28, 2008 Sally, I think it was the heavy skies that first caught my attention. Just had to wait a few minutes for a sailboat to complete the composition. Ahh, serendipity! Thanks for responding. Best, LM. Link to comment
jeff.grant 0 Posted August 30, 2008 Len, this looks awfully blue on my monitor. Perhaps a little PS work to remove it is in order? I like the boat gently sailing into the scene. Link to comment
carsten_ranke 0 Posted August 30, 2008 Magnificent sky ! Well composed with low horizon and the sailboat, shows dimension and acts as anchor. Blue is strong but not over the top on my screen. Strange that colors of uploads are sometimes different than the original. What was your color space before upload ? PN seems to rip off an attached color profile Link to comment
LenMarriott 9 Posted August 30, 2008 Jeff, The colour balance IS decidedly blue. I had the camera set for bright sun & didn't correct in PS enough I guess. It's easy to convert to a more neutral balance but I prefer this bluish tone (call it artistic license) as the properly balanced version looks almost B&W, to which, incidentally, it lends itself quite nicely. Lots of options here. Always a pleasure to hear from 'down under' Best, LM. Link to comment
LenMarriott 9 Posted August 30, 2008 Carsten, Yes, I too have learned not to get too excited if a shot looks off colour or less than perfectly sharp on the web. There is a lot of slack in the system from what the camera sees to what a screen halfway around the world portrays. That said most results are remarkable & one can't really blame the system if the composition sucks. The native profile of my camera is sRGB & only JPG is available, no options on this entry level beauty. Always nice to hear from you. Don't be a stranger! Best, LM. Link to comment
LenMarriott 9 Posted September 1, 2008 Spotted while walking along the lakeshore. A true grab shot of a subject of opportunity. Your comments\critiques will be gratefully received. Best, LM. Link to comment
greg mccracken 12 Posted September 2, 2008 Lovely image Len. The sky is just great and nicely exposed. Nice placement of the diminutive boat to avoid it taking centre place in the scene of the water and sky. Link to comment
LenMarriott 9 Posted September 2, 2008 Greg, Thanks for jumping in here. The sky was the main attraction here though I'm glad I waited for the boat to enter the scene. Would have been pretty plain without it. The boat establishes scale & context. Like salt on an otherwise bland meal, just a little is essential, too much and all you can taste is the salt. Best, LM. ryourth 0 Posted October 1, 2008 Think your image is very nice.Agree the sky is the strongest elemernt but you can't help returning to the small sailboat & can't help thinking, it's journey is just starting & you wonder where he is going..I don't find the blue is too strong, the only criterion is how the image appears, if a more saturated blue improves the image then this way to go. Is Canon's Digital Professionl Photo available as an imaging program? Best Regards-Ross. Link to comment
LenMarriott 9 Posted October 1, 2008 Ross, Thanks for your in-depth analysis. I feel that the sailboat, while very small within the image, is essential to it's success with the heavy skies simply suggesting the availability of a good breeze to help it along. I also think this shot could be warm (sepia) toned, warmer in colour balance, or converted to B&W, & all would be equally successful. As for Canon's image manipulation program, I'm not familiar with any other than that which came with the camera, Canon Zoombrowser EX. I have PS CS so I always use that. No sense complicating life any more than I need to. :-) Best, LM. Link to comment
