An absolutely gorgeous Spanish mission outside of Tucson. Alas, they had lots of scaffolding around the outside of the building for repairs. So I had to attempt to shoot creatively. It's kind of like people who will only ever get to Washington, DC once in their lives and arrive to find their favorite monument encased in scaffolding. It HAS to be done periodically. But it can certainly ruin a once-in-a-lifetime trip.... (sigh....)

I had difficulty with the black/white function to make the palm tree look separate from the sky. How could I have done this differently? Any thing else?

Fantastic!! Superior tones and contrast... a really beautiful conversion. As for the palm, I'm definitely low tech, but I'd zoom in and dodge the mid tones and high lights within the fronds. Others will probably have better methods... Regardless, Love the shot... Mike

This is an image so tightly associated with the Great Ones (Strand, Adams, etc.) that it is hard to look at objectively.

Technically, you could use a bit more contrast in the foreground, and maybe more texture in the whites--the latter is probably a matter of sun angle. To separate the pine from the sky, you needed to emphasize the color contrast between the green tree and the blue sky. In Lightroom or PSCS3 (B/W Adj Layer) you can do this by adjusting the green and blue sliders.

Thanks, guys. Les - I definitely played with the green and blue sliders in PScs3 - but it was probably the color contrasts before I did the B&W layer ... I found that the green slider didn't effect much of the image at all.....

Very massive and gorgeous building!

I think this is very good B/W picture. I dont know how to do B/W pictures, but this pleased my eyes and then i think this is good :)

Looks like in the sky is genie of the bottle from story Aladdin. LOL :)

Im glad you sharing this! -E

Couple of thoughts: first, I'd clone out (not crop) the tiny sliver of tower in the extreme upper left side, it is distracting. If you cropped, you'd probably have similar issues with stuff in along the lower left side. Second, I think you could do a curves adjustment to separate the palm, and then use a layer mask to bring it in. You could also back off the blue and cyan a hair and see if that helps provide some separation too (I'm assuming you shot this with a cir polarizer on?). Tack-sharp and an excellent black and white conversion. Cheers! Chris

BTW, I think they have another year or so (funds driven schedule) of exterior restoration before the scaffolding finally comes down.

Hi Lou Ann. I really don't know any tricks on B/W conversion but I read a couple of good suggestions here that I will also note for my future tries in the B/W world. This looks very nice to me. I love how dark the sky shows up against the white building. What a wonderful series of curves and lines and shadows and light. Artfully done!

Thanks, Chris - I will keep "learning about curves" on my list! And I didn't even NOTICE the sliver of building on the left ... it certainly should be cloned out (and easily done!) Thanks also for the construction schedule - I simply may need to get back to Tucson in a couple of years to enjoy shooting the gorgeous building again! :-)
