bosshogg 4 Posted August 20, 2008 Yes the sign is no longer used. It pretty much has to be seen large to understand what it is. Link to comment
laurentlacoste 0 Posted August 20, 2008 Very nice shot. The desaturation and lens flare work very well there, I think. Another Americana wonder we love so much. Link to comment
bosshogg 4 Posted August 20, 2008 Thanks. I knew this one would not be everyone's cup of tea, but I just liked the shape of the sign with its appendages. The painting on the sign was mostly faded and the sky was kind of blah, so I just let the mouse go wild with the sliders and went with the results. Link to comment
Jack McRitchie 150 Posted August 21, 2008 Good shot. I couldn't tell you why I like it, I just do. It seems to exist in a world of its own. Link to comment
bosshogg 4 Posted August 21, 2008 Thanks. It really was in a world of its own. Pretty much left to its own devices. Link to comment
adan1 0 Posted August 22, 2008 I find the three spheres enthralling. The dilapidated sign has a charm of its own. Perhaps it's like the horse depicted on it with a defiant atttitude to not let go. Link to comment
bosshogg 4 Posted August 22, 2008 Thanks. I can see you looked at it closely. I could have made the printing more obvious, but I did not feel that it was the key element. Personally I liked the light at the top and the way it has the sun hitting it. Link to comment
amalsircar 2 Posted August 22, 2008 David, you are exploring new frontiers. A symbolic image and goes to my favourite portfolio. Link to comment
bosshogg 4 Posted August 22, 2008 Wow, I didn't expect I would get anyone to look at this one, much less to put it into their faves folder. I'm humbled and honored. Thanks Amal Link to comment
michaellinder 16,611 Posted August 22, 2008 David: This is a very artfully composed, created, and processed photograph. The spatial order of the three spheres makes me wonder whether the largest is simply an old sign or, instead, a parabolic antenna. The subtle blue on the sign also is very effective in way of contrast. Great work! Thanks for sharing it with us. michael Link to comment
bosshogg 4 Posted August 22, 2008 Thank you very much for the comment. When I first read it, I had not had my coffee yet and the eyes were not functioning well. I thought you said it was an "awfully" composed image. To be honest I had expected some would feel that way, so I rolled back my eyes and thought to myself, "Here we go." Then when I read it again I realized my mistake. So nobody has really panned it yet. Link to comment
dmo_galleries_chicago_phot 0 Posted August 22, 2008 Normally I'd bitch about the circles in the upper left, but I actually like them here since they're the same shape as the sign--it creates sort of a circle theme. As you surely know, I love the sign. Link to comment
jeffl7 0 Posted August 23, 2008 I thought of Springsteen's "Radio Nowhere." "Is there anyone alive out there?" I find these old neon motel signs to be excruciatingly interesting. Link to comment
bosshogg 4 Posted August 23, 2008 Not sure if this was a motel or service station sign. Whatever went with it is gone. Either way, I obviously agree with you. I could photograph every one of them and never get bored. They represent so much that has gone before, and portend that which is coming. Link to comment
ld 0 Posted January 1, 2010 Hi DM, I've been sitting here for 30 minutes looking at your photos of signs. Really evocative subjects, some of them very funny, and well captured and framed, some of them in difficult lighting. You ought so put some together; I think there are museums that would be interested in this collection. LD Link to comment
