Richard - a lovely image. I did not check to see what lens you used on this but I try and use the maximum zoom and keep the aperture about two or three stops from being wide open - this helps a bit with the background mentioned in the previous comment. When you open up that aperture (less DOF) then you must try and see if most parts of the heron is equidistant to the lens - if not focus on the eyes. Hope this helps.

Thank you, Tony! I used a new Nikkor 80-400mm VR zoom at 330mm. I shot this at f 5.6 at 1/2000 sec and I think that the lower portion of the white pine tree was in the same focal plane as the heron. The upper portion of the tree is back far enough to be out of focus. Thanks for the suggestions.
