Windows are okay, maybe the door shouldn't be black, but the first thing I noticed was the dark portion of the reflection on her gold dress which I guess is hard to control.

I didn't notice the doors and windows. Ha ha. I like the way all of the tones and textures work together in this photo. Very nice. Walt

Thanks Walt.

Mike, what dark portion? And yes, the only way to control them would have been to completely surround her with lighting devices: scrims and reflectors. I guess the brighter patches are from the sky, and the darker ones from the trees behind me, and/or the ground in between us.

Super sexy model Doug, and really a great shot, I don't see anything wrong with it. As far as the lighting on her dress, yes you could use a reflector, but even if you did that I think the reflector itself would show up in the reflection of her dress, you could put it even below her, but really, I think the lighting as it is, is great. I could see maybe blocking the door with the pillar if you find it distracting, or maybe open the door, so there's an open doorway behind her. Just my observasions. Well done :)

I think it all works....

don't care for the ankle tattoos... but that's not the photographer's issue...

much cleaner lines without them.... the windows provide nice accent relief

The gold of her dress harmonizes with her hair and the light brick colors...

Arm angles are spot on... nice energy from her raised right arm, right through the torso and curving into the left leg... well balanced.

I just like it!

Frederick, all week long I've been removing her tattoos, and then the ONE time I don't do it, I get called on it! (sigh)

At least it's not her whole body. Too many tattoos and we will not work together.

Scott, and Michael, this was our first shoot, and we had just met, so we had to give ourselves some leeway on location and concept. But, now that we know each other, and she's happy with these results, I think we can make more interesting pictures.

Permission to speak candidly, Doug...

Maybe it's a case of individual differences; I find many models tend to over pose resulting in images that look, well, over posed (not that I have all that much personal experience). This is in contrast with your "Girl with a straw hat" which comes across as more natural, conveying a feeling of beauty and happiness in a way I find more appealing. I guess if I had a point, it would be that the pose perhaps shouldn't dominate the mood, stealing the show, as it were, over the actual content or message. "Two kittens" might be the exception in the series - natural and beautiful.

hence the term: Poser.

I hear what you're saying, Mike, and agree with you, but the goals here, with Jenna, were/are different than with "normal" pictures. Jenna aspires to be a fashion model, and with them, the more outrageous the pose, in some respects, the better. Clothing also contributes, and so the model's body becomes a canvas that interprets various things: the makeup, the clothes, the concept, etc. At least that's how I'm learning to see it. Marc would call this a portrait, but I would not. I agree with him that a portion of the model's personality has to come through, but on the whole, the intention is not to portray the model's inner soul, rather it might be to project an attitude, or sell a product.

And also, I would have been happy with Kittens if that was all we did, but part of my striving to do this kind of work is to get out of the senior portrait mode. I may be going about it in the wrong way, but I have to start somewhere...
