Our own Milky Way Galaxy, looking out through the denser part of the

disk. What you are seeing is interstellar gas and dust clouds of the

Milky Way, back-lit by the stars behind them. Our galaxy is disk

shaped and when you look out through the disk, you see an area of more

concentrated stars and the clouds shown.

Set up was a tripod mounted Canon 5D @1250 ISO, Canon 50MM 1.8 lens at

1.8 for 30 seconds.

The stars lack sharpness from a couple of things. First the lens was

wide open and there's some blooming happening or flare. (focus might

not have been perfect also, I'm going blind) Second, the earths

rotation caused some streaking during the 30 sec exposure. Third, the

tripod was on a dock on a lake, with boats tied to it (not the most

stable platform.)

The galaxy was visible to the unaided eye that night but it is much

more prominent in the photo, than it appeared to the eye.
