It is hard to go wrong with the loving father and child but this particular look has been done so much that I want to see something new or some pretty strong photography. The kid looks good but dad looks like a lump (and he looks like he would pound me for saying so). Also, biting his lip may indicate affection but it may just show slow wittedness. It is not a good look for him.

To improve the composition, I would have come in closer from a higher angle and had him bring the kid closer to his face. This would accentuate Dad's strength and would be less demanding on his expression.) Also, I would try to get the shadow to fall across his muscles to show his strength, not just his pudge. A very slight second light from the other side in the back would give him more definition.

Finally, Dad should have both hands under the child so as not to obscure the kid as much.

As I said, it is not a bad photo but when you work in a time worn style you need to bring the goods.

I saw it differently than Joshua. I think Dad's expression and his stiff hands show that he's afraid he might drop the baby, while the baby's expression show he trusts Dad completely. I also like Dad's shape. It's almost a Madonna and child because you can't see his hair and then you see the "man hands" and realize the "dress" is tattoos. It is definitely "something new" in my eyes.

Joshua...Jim...Paolo...Susan and Hamed...Thank you for your time and thoughts. Joshua...yes I agree...It is a popular style. I actually have several versions of this set up that address all of your points. I hope that you are able to visit some of my other images too. I always appreciate detailed feedback. Susan...thank you...yes...that is actually why I posted this one. I don't find it the strongest of the bunch which is kind of why I liked it.
