guillelobera 0 Posted August 5, 2008 This photo shows a detail of "thirteen laughing at each other" by JuanMuñoz.Juan Muñoz (b. 1953, Madrid; d. 2001, Ibiza) is knowninternationally for his enigmatic sculptural installations, oftenpopulated by strangely haunting, almost-human figures. He is renownedfor sculptural works in which he situates the human figure withinelaborate or complex architectural settings. These are created usingelements such as patterned floors, staircases and balconies. Then, bya highly considered placement of the figures, Muñoz entices theviewer into an engagement with the implied dramas unravelling within. For its Bilbao presentation, the exhibition, organized by Tate Modernin cooperation with the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, includes majorlarge-scale works such as "conversation piece" (1994), "derailment"(2000-01) and "thirteen laughing at each other" (2001). Designedspecifically to enter into a dialogue with Frank Gehry’s unusualarchitectural spaces, the installation transforms each gallery into achapter of a continuous story, featuring self-reflective characters inwhom we recognize our own fears and preoccupations.
