As I've mentioned before, I still recall fondly spending several weeks in Manitoba as a youngster and listening to the loons echo across the cool water. The clarity and color of the water brings that memory back.

Linda...I just got back from northern Wisconsin. I love the loons. The ones that I see are just not cooperative with my camera. If I am out in the paddle boat they will circle and play but when I raise the camera they dive. They laugh when they come up. Wonderful image. So you like my new work? I am having some fun with it. I want to print Hot to metallic paper and just mount it to black foam core. What do you think???

Great to hear from you.

I like the mood a lot. The depth of color in the water works really well, especially against the brightly lit upper area. Your main subject stands out nicely and is quite poised. You did a great job exposing for quite a range of lighting, maintaining great texture even on the hot spots of the rocks, which have great energy.

Compositionally, I'm a little less moved. There seems a lot going on in the upper half, not all of which really draws me in. I tend to really want to stay in the lower half, within the more simple geometry and depth of the greens.

Mary, it was hot on that day and still is. It has been in the 30+ Celcius range for the past few weeks. Because we are in a semi desert climate it is quite dry and not too bad. That humid heat can suck the life right out of you! Thanks for commenting.

Jeff, I haven't spent a lot of time in Manitoba, my biggest memory is of the sunsets on the prairies. What an amazing light show that is. I have heard about the beautiful lakes in the north. Some of my husband's fishing buddies go there regularily. One of these days you will have to come and see the beautiful British Columbia turquoise lakes.

Becky, I have been to Wisconsin. Many years ago I viisted realtives who were living in West Bend. I usually have the same experience as you with the loons. This mother had one little baby who was underwater when I took this. I think she was more concerned with where her baby was than me and my camera.

Nezif, thank you so much. All the best.

Linh, thank you, I appreciate your comments. Warm regards.

Fred, I am head over heals in love with the dark greens and turquoises we see in the shady edges of the lakes in this area. They always seem magical to me. You do have a good point about the upper part of this image and I will try it cropped. My reason for leaving it in was the way that stream of light shines down through the trees, rocks and splashs into the water, illuminating the submerged rocks, turning them golden. It was a very pronounced ray, although I don't think that really comes across here. I also liked the way it backlit the leaves in the top right. I took 250 odd shots that day, maybe I will try another one that concentrates on just the light. Thanks so much for your thoughts Fred. I am gaining a different perspective on composition thanks to you. All the best.
