There once was a fair maiden who lived by the sea. She was said to be the most beautiful women in all the known world. Each day she would lay by the shore and sing with the birds and waves. Her voice matched that of her beauty, and many a sailor would risk crashing upon the rocks to hear her song and enjoy her grace. Then, one day a prince of the sea heard her song and went to the surface to see what manner of creature could stir his heart so. When he gazed upon this fair maiden, he knew he had to have her. But he also knew that the people of the land could not live beneath the waves. So he devised a plan. He came back the next day and snuck closer to the shoreline before the maiden did appear. When she sat down and began to sing, the sea prince sprang forth from the waves and captured her. Before she could cry out, he turned her to stone and took her beneath the waves to his kingdom. Alas, he waited for her to sing, but she could not. So he set her in his garden so that he could visit her as he pleased. The sea prince has long ago vanished, but the maiden lays quietly below the waves, waiting.

Joe,

I think that your story is perfect to fit this image. I think the tones are wonderful. Everything blends together very well. I know you put alot of thought and effort into this one and it definatly shows. Fantastic work!

The curious part of me wants to deconstruct this into its component parts so I understand. Alas, that would turn me into the sea prince wanting to take something beautiful and impose my own need for control onto it.

I'm content to let it be. Just to let it sing on the page.

A lovely creation.

Joe, it is a well known story in the Greek mythology ( different though in some parts) , but it is not so important as your version is nice and the image is even better...beautiful light , color palette, texture, and it sings....

Intended to look like a painting.Main photos used include the statue

from Allerton Park, Illinois, tufa from Mono Lake, and skyline from

Niagara Falls,Canada. I may post the original shots but I want the focus

to be in the final product not the ps and painting work. Thanks for your

thoughts.

I enjoy the story ( always got a soft spot for fairy tales) which reminds me of "The Little Mermaid" story too. Creative work, Joseph, by combining different elements to bring us into a world of fantasy.

A brilliantly fantastic image, Joseph. I like the color combinations, particularly in the background, and the entire atmosphere. Extremely creative.

Whoever does not have dreams do not create fantasies or maybe whoever does not have fantasies does not create dreams. Either way you create fantasies and dreams. Congratulations. Vicente.

I love the entire piece. The story adds to the background but does not change my opinion of the image you've created. This is a brilliant work of digital art. I'm not particurlarly interested in the component parts but in the final product. This evokes a fantasy that comes from you but I feel like one can lend ones own imagination to the image and come to the same place.

Another great job.

A very sincere thank you to everyone. I haven't had much time for a couple of months for sharing yet you all managed to drop by to visit. This was a very fun yet frustrating project. I can sketch okay but trying to paint in digital is rough. I originally wanted to paint the statue in but could not blend it properly. that will come in time. Most of the coral is hand painted with a Wacom tablet in Photoshop and a little in Painter. I'm still not satisfied with this and will probably add more subtle sea life.

Danielle: thanks for all the help and input. I'm glad I didn't use the earlier version. You really pushed me to do better!

Ahmet: Thank you friend. You're too kind.

Mehmet: I appreciate that! Nice to hear from you as always!

Jeff:  Perhaps you should be writing these stories! I noticed you have a recent upload of a fantasy water scene too:)  I think you have more class than the sea prince anyway. thanks!.

Pnina: It is a variant of several myths. I was always fascinated by  Greek and Roman mythology. I can't remember most of their details but they certainly have left their influence on me. thank you:)

S Tamson: Thanks for stopping by!

Tero: I was hoping for that effect. I need to improve those painting chops. Thank you!

Jeffrey: Thanks for taking the time. I have enjoyed your latest shoreline images.

Cherlyn: If I had some shark shots I would put Flotsam and Jetsam in there:) Thank you!

Roger: You should see the base image. It is very blue green. I tried hard to work up layers of colour. Perhaps I could have enhanced the atmosphere with more dramatic lighting effects? Not sure.  Thanks a lot!

Jose: Thank you very much!

Vincente: I'm humbled by your comments. I think we as photographers and artist all create dreams. Thank you my friend.

Bob: I was wondering if you would recognize the skyline from your recent travels. I enjoy sharing the originals but I want the wow to come from the final image. I like how you state that the viewer can expand on the scene through their imagination! I will be posting some source images with a spoiler alert later but you can view one of them in my portfolio if you like .(here) thanks !!!

I can see the skyline. You're on the Canadian side on the opposite side of the street. looking up at the observation tower. I think I also see the facade of the building that houses the night lights. Not sure but I think so. I had to do some looking through some phots, I don't have any with this angle and I don't know when it was shot. This place has changed so much over the years that the only thing that remains recognizeable is the walkway to the falls and the gift shop right there at the falls. Everything else has changed. It's even hard to find a tacky honeymoon suite with all the casinos. But I guess that's progress.

You're on the right tracks, but on the wrong side of them :o) This is from the USA side on the horseshoe falls viewing area. I believe you have the buildings correct. That is the nightlight building for the horseshoe. Darren and Danielle figured it out by the bell/hammer shaped structure on the left. I couldn't believe they actually knew what it was! We couldn't go to the fun side so I'm not sure what you're talking about. lol. Thanks again Bob.

I've driven through about 20 times over the years and have only stopped on the American side one time, in 1969 with my gradparents. After that I've always gone to the Canadian side, maybe someday we'll stop on the other side to get the view again. I think we're planning another trip around the beginning of October, maybe we'll change it up.

A very impressive and imaginative achievement. I could never have figured out the construction if you had not told us.

a super creation - the turquoise with brown/Gold combination is very appealing and so is the light on the statue. I would have preferred a different blending on her 'shoulder to breast' but that is strictly an artistic consideration. well done.
