This is a nice, straight forward capture both visually and story-wise. I like the isolation of subjects from background (nice blur work in PS BTW, if I'm not mistaken.)

Long time since I've seen you comment on any photos, except in the non-critique forums. Hope to see more of your comments, as I highly value them as learning tools for me. In this case, I didn't even touch the background with PS. The bg blur you are seeing is from the lens and the lens alone. The 500mm f4 provides an impressive bokeh, especially at wider apertures, closer distances to the subject, and the 1.6 magnification factor with the Canon 40D. Your comment has prompted me to enter this image's EXIF data to reflect these factors.

Ahhh...that explains it then. Indeed 500mm f4 wide open would yield a very sweet out-of-focus background. Yes, it's been a while and I'll try to keep it up. ^_^
