Phil_Light 795 Posted June 21, 2008 Textures with stark light and shadow adrift within the frame. Link to comment
ekaufman1 0 Posted June 21, 2008 I glanced through your portfolio and you obviously know what you are doing both technically and artistically so I'm not sure if my comments will be useful. Personally, I was not drawn to the image at first glance but after looking at your work I know you know how to see so I came back. Things that stand out to me: I like the way the line formed by the sun breaking through the clouds directs my eye to the more subtle shapes defined by the light on the water; I like the texture of the light on the left side of the image and the texture of the clouds at the top of the image. I find myself distracted by the lack of texture in the white shirt mainly because it lacks what I am seeing as the key element of the image (texture) and because it causes my eye to leave the path created by the outline of the light in the sky and water. A couple of other distractions, I would have liked either sharp focus throughout or a greater difference between the foreground focus and the background focus. As I write this I am sure you can see these things and would like to know what you see here and what it is that draws you to this image? Link to comment
Phil_Light 795 Posted June 23, 2008 As you know texture-less images are as much a statement about texture and form as textured objects. My principal idea was one of juxtaposition in lighting and subject planes. In this way the picture works for me even with the highlit areas showing a textureless solid form. What can I say? I like the image as an abstract for its contradictions as much as its ability to use known forms and shapes and often times make them seem different or confused from what they really are. I don't think its so much about what you can recognize in the image, or how much depth of field is found in the image, but more about the apparent incongruities as if things are Adrift from their more commonly understood or known terms. That's why I like this image and I wanted to see what thought it might provoke here? Link to comment
ekaufman1 0 Posted June 26, 2008 Thanks for the explanation. One of the great things about photography is that it lets you see through someone else's eyes but sometimes it helps to have a glimpse of the artist's mind as well. Here's to discussion and dialog. Link to comment
