myattphotoandfotoart39 1 Posted June 15, 2008 Thank you. I am glad you wrote something. I was not going to post this. Link to comment
dberryhill 3 Posted June 16, 2008 I agree. It is lovely. You might consider cropping it as a square from the top. I'm not sure the bottom part adds much. Link to comment
myattphotoandfotoart39 1 Posted June 16, 2008 On this one I cannot agree although it is subjective so maybe you are correct. Here comes a long explanation why I shot this way. I shot the photo this way because my mind sees/thinks this way: [a] the buckle is important and though I did not see at the time that skirt seam below the buckle is important; it adds interest and fills space. the hand is very very important and to me without the hand I have no photo because her hand and the buckle and seam (mostly the hand) close the photo at the bottom of the frame. Without the hand the photo does not close and her arm runs out of the picture; ie nothing to finish it off the photo -unless we cropped clear up to the elbow). I think I closed the frame well on the left and the top and the bottom as it is this way. I could have included all of the big girl and finished her off and then cropped the other three sides back to where they are now but I was framing in the view finder so I did not think of cropping the three sides back to this. I just did not see that I could crop back When I shot I was thinking that hand on the right had to be there -something had to be there and I am big on Hands! Wow, this is long and not right because I am not supposed to counter the critiquer. However I did give your viewpoint a lot of thought. If you are correct Doug than we have to do a whole new training on me and how I see things. I think I would have to take an art course and have it drilled into my head so I can see it different :-) Dumb, dumb. Maybe I'll delete this later? Link to comment
dberryhill 3 Posted June 16, 2008 You obviously gave the crop a lot more thought that I did when I made my comment. And your reasoning makes perfectly good sense. If the crop as is contains elements that are part of the message of the picture, then it should stay as it is. I certainly have no problem with your disagreement with my suggestion. Discussion can be helpful to both parties to the conversation. What I think we find annoying is that some people ask for critiques when they are really asking for absolute adoration, and any sort of criticism is taken as an insult at best. I don't think we fall into that category. Link to comment
myattphotoandfotoart39 1 Posted June 16, 2008 Doug, to be honest I am not sure how much thought I gave and how much was habit without thought. I do know for sure if I realized immediatly that if I cut of the arm I would have taken a second shot. I never forgot almost twenty years ago I took a shot of an old lady in in W. Virgina, is restaurant behind the counter with her hands on the counter. I cut off the hands. I was proud of that photo; to me it had so much character. The man at the camera store who had been a photgrapher -he said to me.to throw away the picture because I cut off the hands. I never forgot that. Still I do cut off hands. :-(( Link to comment
myattphotoandfotoart39 1 Posted June 16, 2008 As you said it does look like a little "extra" at the bottom but I do not know how to fix given everything. Link to comment
