I love the sharpness of the main subject and his "encagement." The expanse between him and the stand on the other side, paired with his stance, makes for an interesting tension.

Can anyone please tell me why this got a 3/3? Maybe it sucks, that's fine......if anyone can offer any reason why I deserve a 3/3, I'm all ears. Please be honest and help me out.

Come on. Why care? I was just thinking how your not liking my current photo actually makes me feel good. I don't want to create the kind of photos that you or anyone else is going to like all the time. Also, a personal vision and a little creativity means taking chances, thinking outside the box. Well, some people like only the box. They give 3/3s when they don't get what they want. Now, I know that you appreciate a lot of my work and you generally are moved by what I do. But, because I'm doing various things, personal things, I would expect that occasionally, maybe more, you will not like something of mine. That, to me, means I'm mixing it up and I'm doing things esthetically controversial enough that some won't like it. Good. So, that's what others are doing with you. Or, it could be a jerk who is giving every photo that comes along a 3/3. Or, it could be someone who only likes Elvises on velvet. Or, someone who only responds to pretty, colorful sunsets or flowers.

In any case, I think the depth of field makes this shot in many ways. You scored with focus. Very nice exposure as well. I'm not sure how very original shooting a kid through a fence is, which may bother some people, but I think each of us wants to have our own personal version of a lot of iconic kinds of shots. I think this photo falls under that category, and I think you've done a good and proficient job of it.

I appreciate what you said, I don't have any issues with someone not liking my photographs, I'm just frustrated by an empty critique. I am on this site to learn and get better, to feel out how people respond to certain things and a 3/3 is an excellent learning opportunity that is missed. Those are the people I'm looking for and it's very disappointing to hear "I don't like it" and that's it.

I understand your frustration because I have the same concerns. I think Fred offered you a well-thought out answer (or justification) for why you might receive a '3'. I agree that many people may not be all that interested in this particular subject matter; but nevertheless, IMHO this photograph is well-constructed and certainly deserving of a higher mark. Some people have a hard time distinguishing between the subject and the craft. So we really have to not allow ourselves to be upset by the occasional low rating. I know......easier said than done! :)

Tim... this is what I call a "slice of life" photo, a common scene but you've captured it well. The detail in the fence and the DOF work together to offer excellent depth.

As for ratings :-) It's a flawed system that has been modified at least once, but still has gaping holes. A little editorial, if I may.... how about trashing the ratings and have only comments? If someone wants to add a 3/3, 7/7 or even 10/10 to a comment, then all the better. Oh yes, I would limit comments to only persons whose "Comments on Gallery Photos & Portfolios" are equal to or greater in number volume than their "Critique Requests"!! We have way too many "participation challenged" posters. Just $.02... Mike

I like your style keep it up. This is very sharp and unique. Also the black and white is a very good choice. Peace to you.
