This image won the 2008 "Decisive Moment" award for prints from the Leica Society of Great Britain. The winning print was made on an enlarger looked much better than this scanned version, however.

From the Glasgow v. St. Petersburg match in Manchester. Have a look at the others if

you like.

Jamie,

Nice photo. I think this one would be even better without the photo shop manipulation. It looks like one of those shots that the leica people love and strive for. So I say, keep it natural. But, that's just my opinion.

Thanks very much, Tom. Glad you like it.

Ilford Delta 50 black-and-white film, which I used, has stunningly fine grain but is a nightmare to scan. The raw scan has lots of black and lots of white but almost no grey. I applied an elaborate curve to get it this natural. I haven't tried to add impact with the curve, just to get everything balanced. I'm not sure what the photo lab does, but their small print also has a processed look. I probably just need a better scanner. I really don't want to learn to use a darkroom again!

Ilford XP2 scans much more smoothly, by the way.

Jamie,

Now I understand. I wondered why you would have such a good shot and then try some solarization trick in Photoshop. But Fair enough, black and white film can be a real pain to scan. I change my rating to a 6/6.

Ignore the lack of other ratings for this photo. You should see some of the highest rating photos of the last few days. Evidently someone must have lot of cyber buddies, or fabricated user accounts.

Incidentally, I did not even know this was shot with a Leica until I did a follow up on my comments. So I guess I nailed it when I said it has that Leica look. And I guess that you have the ability to make those kinds of timeless journalistic type shots.

I know the darkroom is a lot of work but I think you ought to try it again to give this kind of shot justice.

This whole set is fantastic (scanning issues apart). Very brave to attempt to cover an event like this, but you pulled it off really well.
