Thank you for the visit and especially the comment. You are correct and because of the other eye I did not take the short distance into account and I spoiled the picture but I did not see it as you did. I am always preset to wide open. I try to focus on the eye. In this case f2.8 or f4 is better because of the other eye (so f1.8 is wrong). I never have time to reset to a different aperature and second shot. I stopped her; ask to shoot, shot and she was gone. In about those 3 seconds she gave a perfect pose -she is a natural. But maybe then she thought I am weird and was running away? Even if she agreed to another shot the natural pose would be gone -that is how it is with people. I only get the REAL person on the FIRST shot. That's how it is. You are very correct about that other eye. I see now that it is not a good picture. Again thanks for the time to look and comment.

I read somewhere that if a picture has the front eye in focus, viewers will not take much notice that the rear one isn't, or perhaps they won't care. I have that reaction to this. The girl is a delight, and she was captured naturally. I am not troubled by the short DOF. Could it be better? Sure - most pictures could. Is it a bad picture? Absolutely not.

I was never before aware just how shallow DOF can be with a 50mm/1.8 lens even at that close range. Whatever viewers might think I now will always see that eye and my heart will sink.

Seeing many of these kids in Israel lifted my spirit. She is a perfect example of all of them. And yours is a beautiful photo.

Meir, please continue to take 'imperfect' pictures.

I look at her, am drawn into her eyes, and am aware of her aliveness, her confident shyness, and her natural magnetism, the property of many of our children. I think of Israel and her vulnerability, and that of the children in the adjoining countries. I wish our hearts and minds were big enough to rise above the daily individual tragedies that we inflict on each other.

With best wishes,

Hakim
