Thanks Meir,

I strive for elegance in everything I shoot. Elegance has more lasting appeal than just a pretty subject.

Charles, I adore almost everything you've done. But not this one. I hate to be the lone voice, and I hate even more to say a negative word about your work, but this one doesn't do it for me.

Trying to pinpoint the "problem" for me led me first to it's regularity, symmetry, "predictability." However, that's not a problem. Those are often elements of beauty.

I like the lighting, I like the subtle shadows. So, the problem? It hits me as sterile and ... lifeless. Bland.

Ok, I'm likely wrong, I admit that up front. But this is not your best work (as far as I see it).

Thanks for your comment Rachel.

Actually I wasn't looking to create "art" or anything particularly creative, I was trying to get the most technically perfect picture I could get, lighting- and exposure-wise.

I always appreciate comments, especially yours.

Thanks Doug and Mikhail. Getting the lighting and reflections right took a long time and almost 200 exposures before I got to here.

Nice work. I like the simplicity and the reflections within the subject. The light and exposure are wonderful.

fantastic light control here, it is not easy to shoot this material and still having this quality, it is easy to see that you know what you are doing, to be sincere for it is the most difficult subject, can you maybe give more details about this shot? warm regards.

Thanks Joao,

The technical details are listed in the Details tab, under the photo. But as far as lighting, it was with only one 24" X 36" softbox, just out of the frame to the left.

I experimented with the camera angle and the light position until I had the reflection I wanted. This was about the 200th frame of this subject.

Wow. Very impressive lighting which, as a beginner, seems like magic to me. I'm guessing a single, large (tall?) softbox, maybe 45° to camera left, shooting down from above the item. This goes in my collection of lighting exercises to learn from. Thanks!
