Red Tulips

LenMarriott

Spotted on a recent walk through one of Barrie's beautifully managed parks. Backlighting was a major motivator. Canon A540, 'P' mode, ISO 80, 1\400 @ f5.5., 23.2mm (140mm equiv), -1\3 exposure compensation to reduce possibility of blown highlights. Resizing and minor cropping in PS. Best, LM.

Would you have bothered? If so, how would you have made this a

stronger image, either pre or post exposure? Your comments\critiques

will be gratefully received. Best, LM.

Yes, I would have bothered, and probably have made a mess of it by overdoing the pink in post-processing. Mine would come out looking like that flourescent poster board grade six kids like. What would I have done to make it a 'better' image? Len! Define !better'! I would possibly have given it a different interpretation...that's all. Anyway...beats the hell out of snow in a lot of non-photographic ways!

Rob, Thanks for your insight. Note that the key word was 'stonger', not 'better. :-) I cropped in camera for a tight composition, further cropping in PS to make it a square. Seems to suit the 'random pattern' that this one falls into as well as other categories. The colours are remarkably accurate since this came right from the digital camera to PS without my usual film-scanner workflow inserted ahead of that. I think the answer to your level of cynisism, with this subject matter at least, is to simplify. I too doubt I'd get as much luck out of a film based senario. Taken at Heritage Park the other day, and I think, with the cool weather we've been having that they may still be good to photograph. Worth a look. Best, LM.

Hi Len,

I love the colours! Don't think I would have gotten it a well as you have. You managed to fill all of the areas of the frame with just enough flowers without leaving an empty corner. Would liek to get in touch with you soon. Have just been incredibly busy! Might be up in Barrie in a couple of weeks.

Greg, In truth this was a grab shot taken while heading back to the car after an outing at the park with my grandson. The backlit blooms were too hard to ignore. It's cropped a tad from the original to eliminate those open areas you spoke of. Other than that only a slight levels adjustment and a tad of sharpening in PS was necessary thanks to the superb image quality from my wife's Canon A540 P&S. (I never cease to be amazed at it's capabilities). Send me an email when you know you are coming. Best, LM.

A grand splash of Pink! The backlight really made this shot as it also lit up the green of the leaves and gave them an iridescent quality. Love your crop too!

Sally, Thanks for stopping by. Looks like you have a folder worth looking into as well. See you there soon. Best, LM.

Kim, the original contained an area of green grass that I thought, post exposure, I could live without. Thus the crop. I still think it was the right decision. Thanks for the validation. The beautiful backlight was what first attracted me. Best, LM.

I thought so too when I first laid eyes on this tulip patch.  Good of you to dig through my folders to find this one.  Many thanks for the validation.  Best, LM.
