Very good. Quite sharp and nice placment in the frame. It would be nice if you could get a picture showing the bird in context. Perhaps it at a flower, or maybe you could get a backround? I've read that you can take an out of focus picture of trees, etc., print it, and place in just behind where you know the bird will come (like a feeder). It might reflect the flash, but maybe you could angle it so it doesn't. You would then have complete control over the backround and it would be illuminated.

 

What equipment did you use? (I assume that you used some flash setup with a long lens?)

Very nice, Monte. I don't if you've noticed a real drop in the number of hummingbirds this year but where I live there have not been nearly as many as in previous years. Hope they've just gone elsewhere & are all right. J

 

Charles, I use a D3, 200-400 VR and SB-800 flash. It was cloudy, so this was just an experiment to try and darken background by underexposing camera settings and using mostly flash lighting for bird.

Janine, I hadn't noticed much difference here in hummers, still quite a few. Might have changed their migratory habits for whatever reason.
