A pilgrim , his backs pierced with small, hook-like needles in penance.

A common sight in Thaipusum festival that is not comfortable to look at

but its a part of their culture.

Many watch in awe as metal pierces the skin with hardly any bleeding and, apparently, no pain as the devotee stands in a trance after weeks of rigorous abstinence. This is actually my 1st time coming so close to them ( though its a yearly affair in Singapore ) , and I was really amazed that his skin didn't break against the force of someone pulling the chain, strecthing his skin to the extreme.

The devotees say it is faith.

Compelling and somewhat brutal image, Cherlyn. I don't think I want to have that kind of faith. Very nice color.

Cherlyn, while this is a very busy shot the focal point is so strong as to overcome. Knowing this is part faith, part biology does not take away from the moment. Well done.

Cherlyn, an intense composition.really represent well the ceremony of the event. Hard for a western eye, to connect to the way of their atonement....

I agree that this is hard for the Western eye to fathom. Not to be too flippant, but it reminds me that every religious belief has strings attached. These are just more visible.

Cherlyn, a good documentary. But this gruesome rituals are an assault on my senses and shocking to me.
