Sunrise at Dead Horse

Well, I like the fact that you tried to do something different with an often photographed place. Including something interesting in the foreground is usually a good idea. In this case, I prefer the upper 40% of the image. The sky does not add to the shot but there's not much you can do to control that. Very nice effort, Josh.

Having stood here before; you nailed this one. I agree with Henrik; in my personal opinion I'd take the sky down half again to what you have. Because of the oxbow and the layering in the rocks there's an illusion that the image tips ever so gently down to the right, but it is not worth correcting in my estimation. Superb light, tones, and contrasts. Cheers! Chris

i do believe that 'the shot' at dead horse point has become increasingly harder to get. when i was there a month ago, there was so much construction going on. the 'normal' rock that i had seen in others photograph is now very difficult to photograph due to the new viewing platform. i was unable to find a location where i could see the entire bend of the river. i think that there is possibly a better photo at the shaffer view point. thanks for the comments guys.

Just as a point of observation, there's another composition in here. Much more intimate; and that is the foreground. A crop down from the top to just below the well lit pinnacle on the right side leaves the terrifically lit foreground layers of sandstone. I know you'd never do it; but it is a hell of a shot too. This is what I call a "micro-scape," and I think they're cool as all get out. Look at this one, Josh; it glows. Cheers! Chris

I agree with Chris. What is going on with the ratings here? This is a very strong shot and one of the better ones from this location I have seen recently. I disagree with the first poster as I find the foreground both successful compositionally and attractive aesthetically. Nicely done.

I love the way the light has caught the rock strata so it looks like wire!
