Paella. This shot is composed to provide a spot for overlaying text and

graphics at the top. Thanks for visiting, and grab a fork!

I'm glad you provided an explanation because I was trying to compose a gentle message that the composition didn't work for me, concentrated as it is at the bottom with SO much space lost into bokeh and relatively dull colors. I should have known you had a plan.

Except for the lemon wedges, this looks like my homemade pizza. All good cooks know the importance of color: is this your cooking? I wonder if I can get there in time for dinner.

Thanks Tim. Indeed, this was one of those "I'm my own worst art director" things, but yeah - at least there as a plan, such it was! Luckily, my wife is a far better chef than I am a graphic artist. But, this is the way this sort of thing gets used.

I'm so glad you printed the workup to show how the finished page might look: it's fabulous! And fascinating to catch a glimse into the process. You are so damned good at this stuff, Matt. Between your skills in photography, graphic design, IT, and writing...well, what the hell are you sitting here in photo.net for! You should be busy producing fine work, taking brief breaks to receive accolades. Here, receive some: accolades! (7/7 for the photo/layout combo.)

Thanks, Tim! Unfortunately, I've just called my bank, and they won't accept a 7/7 as a deposit. I guess I'm going to have to figure out how to charge someone for some of this stuff this month! That next lens isn't going to buy itself.

You do have me thinking up a new recipe, though. I feel a Partridge Pizza coming on. I'll have to talk to the chef.

Hi Pat--

The lighting here was very simple. I was using a Nikon D200, so I had the convenience of using Nikon's CLS system... meaning, I could use the camera's built-in pop-up flash to control an off-camera SB-800 speedlight. The speedlight was on top of a stand with a hot-shoe-friendly umbrella bracket. I set the strobe to a wide zoom, and bounced it out of the umbrella... the umbrella was at about six and a half feet up, and four feet or so to the straight left of the food. The umbrella was tilted in a way to help prevent it from spilling too much light onto the background of the scene (since I wanted it to be a little dimmer... not that I couldn't fix that up in post, too).

While I normally tell the camera's built-in strobe not to contriibute to the exposure, in this case I allowed it to operate at 1/32nd power, just to add a touch of fill from the camera's point of view. Hope this was helpful! It's the sort of rig you can set up in about 3 minutes, almost anywhere.
