Forest Ghost

harrylichtman

Each spring, I illuminate the the edge of the forest with an ordianry light bulb to see what moths I will attract. This fine looking Luna moth was motionless for some time as the night temperatures were cool. As temperatures warmed, wings began moving and it flew offinto the woods. The moth looks ghost-like as it flutters among the branches. While this Luna was quite vibrant in its lime green color, some are near transparent and even appear more ghostly.

Man, you really got just the right moment here. I love the way the sunlight seems to just kiss the wings of the moth. How long did it take you to set up for this shot?

Hi John - It took about 10 minutes to find the right position, mostly because I was using a medium format lens, so I needed to move closer, then back up to get the right cropping, taking into account the minimal depth of field I would have with the lens. This image was cropped slightly so the moth would fill the image. Then it was just matter of seeing what the light would so. The diffused, soft light was more luck than anything. Just a matter of being there, and trying the shot on different days. One never knows where the moths will land, and often they are too deep in the woods to get a good shot, or the background is unattractive. I have tried to let the moth crawl onto my finger and place it in a easier spot to photograph, but have had no luck. The moth doen't want to get off my finger, and when it warms up enough from my finger, flies off. I may try a future shot of the moth quickly vibrating its wings to warm itself up on a cold morning. Thanks for the comment.
