Thanks for the comment Ken.  After a few attempts that evening, tweaking the shutter speed and strobe frequency each time, I finally got one I was happy with.  Without a tripod, the background blurred.  A dent the bat made in the ball was still there in the closest ball render.

I have not attempted more shots like this since that first time.  I think the flash frequency was about 15 hz.  Shutter time must have been 3 or 4 sec.
