loic brohard 0 Posted April 30, 2008 Hi Karl, one of the best "Travel Portrait" I have seen for long. Technically this is perfect, and your two little subjects have an adorable and communicative smile. You made my day ! Congrats, Loic Link to comment

katzpjs 50 Posted May 3, 2008 They are beautiful. How nice that the wind was blowing hard to help really make for a good photograph. I hope your fire was well sheltered from this wind. I've never used dung for fuel but I imagine the smell is not all that bad. Can you provide some insight on this? Link to comment
Karl Schuler 48 Posted May 3, 2008 Dear Shawn, thanks for your comment. The herders in many parts of the world use dried dung of animals for fuel. This is ecollogically much more appropriate than cutting wood which is normally very rare in the dry areas where nomadic pastoralism is the normal way of life. In Mongolia the herders live in yurts called gers. In the center of these felt tents with wooden support there is an iron stove with a chimney There is always some sent of smoke and dairy products in these houses, but it is not disturbing. Take it like this: Dried dung of grazing animals does not stink and well prepared compost even smells good ;-). Karl Link to comment
katzpjs 50 Posted May 3, 2008 Thanks Karl, I suspected as much. Dried grass is dried grass, whether or not an animal was involved in the process. Link to comment
