Roped off area at the Botanical Gardens; couldn't get TOO close, so

mom & babies protected. Used my BIG lens and cropped a fair bit.

This is a very nice series of hummers that you have posted and this is an especially good one. This is only the second time that I have ever seen one of their nests; the first was this phtograph. With all of the hummers that I get in my yard one would think that I would see one of their nests but no such luck. The rampaging squirrels probably destroy them (you know how much I love squirrels). It is very interesting how the nest is apparently "shingled" with bits of lichen taken from the branches. Quite an industrious species! She looks rather proud and cozy sitting in her home, probably has a couple of little ones underneath her as well. Good photograph.

Hope your're all well...Regards.

Thanks, everyone. I need to go back and see if I can get babies in the shot like the other one you linked to. This nest is quite high, though, so it won't be easy.

Remarkable shot. . . I've seen one of these nests on display in a nature center but have never been successful in finding one in a tree (even after I was told what tree it was in). . .

Hi, Kim! My buddy, Dennis, is going to be sooo jealous...he hasn't gotten a nest yet, but has caught some amazing shots of the hummers themselves. I don't think I've ever seen a hummer nest before...didn't know they slowed down enough to sit in one! :) Very cool catch.

Hope all is well for you and Ed. I'm spending all my time on RedBubble lately and having a blast. Too many timeouts here that ate up my time :( Miss everyone, though. If you get a chance, check it out! :)

Gorgeous capture! I have a 1-foot section of vine branch on my bookshelf with two nests on it, about 6 inches apart. I found them when I was cutting old vines off the front porch. We don't have the pretty lichen for decoration, though:)

Thanks for comments, everyone. The nest is about 8-10' up the tree. The area was roped off, so it wasn't TOO hard to spot (Ed found it). I hope to get back and see if there are babies soon. I've only seen one or two other nests in the past and never a hummer in it. I have no idea what Redbubble is, Leslie - I'll have to check it out.

Wonderful shot Kim. That bird definitely has design knowhow with that cool finish. Well done for making the effort. Now could you just saw that middle branch off so it doesn't interfere with her beak *!*

I know, Hanna - I kept waiting for her to move her head even slightly, but she didn't move an inch from this pose. It started raining almost immediately when we spotted her, so no opportunity to move around much. I'll go back and try more.

Beautiful capture, Kim! I've never seen a hummingbird in its nest so far.... this is great. Thanks for sharing!

The nest is about the size of a tennis ball. Really amazing to see! I've actually seen smaller hummer nests (but no birds in it) - like golf ball sized, so this is probably the equivalent of a mansion to a hummingbird! :) She did good.

Very good and rare shot,Kim. Very good composition, exposure,DOF and pastel colours. Many thanks for showing us the nest, which I too have never seen before.

This is so sweet! I was wondering how you ever spotted it - she's camouflaged her nest so well. But reading your comment, I guess the cordons gave her away!

I'm hoping I might see babies when we go back (probably this weekend). I don't know how long they sit on the eggs - I'll have to read up.

Congratulations, I've been on a quest to discover one of these but haven't yet. Nice capture. ~Sky

They are hard to spot, Sky - small and blend in so well. We were lucky they had publicized this in the newspaper and had it roped off.

Ahh, quite fortunate and smart for them to rope it off. Nice record of it here.

I know where some are at a state park but I've been hoping to find one on the property. Long periods with the binoculars. Maybe this week I will get lucky.

Time to start surviving that Texas heat. Have a nice Memorial Day weekend. ~Sky
