The most glaring failure of this photo is that fact that you didn't focus correctly, it's all soft. The pose is awkward and the background is 70's. Always make sure the eyes are bang on focus. You may have used on-camera direct flash, and to me it shows. Get the flash off the camera.

David Bell's insensitive comments are typical of those self assertive jerks who think they know everything. If he had read the photographer's biography he would see that she works for a photo studio and if he had looked carefully in the lower right side of the photo he would discover the studio's copyright notice. The additional fact that she is 17 suggests she is at the beginner's end of the learning spectrum.

It is true that the photo is on the soft side - I used soft focus filters for years. The female customers love them. The background may be 70s or it may have been purchased by the studio much later. Studios often use such devices.

I see nothing wrong with the pose at all. It shows a lovely young lady leaning into the middle of the picture. It suggests a youthful enthusiasm - she is leaning toward and looking into her future.

As for Master Guru Bell's crude comment about on-camera flash, he assumes one would go into a fully equipped studio and use the flash on the camera. One can see a shadow on the left side of the face (camera right) One can see the careful placement of nose shadow, indicating that the main light was quite properly placed.

The only real criticism I would offer is that the fill light is too bright. A stronger contrast ratio would give more character to the face.
