It's a very nice shot and your friends probably think highly of it. If you are ambitious about creating an effect though, you'd have to know that similar shots have been done...a lot. It has a stock shot look to it and would be lost in any catalogue. So my only advice would be to look at a lot of photos and know what is a commonly done shot and then when you come upon a potential cliche, find some way to make it different, really different. Then you get the best of both worlds: a shot that is instantly recognized but also amazes.

Excellent landscape James.. these layered images are difficult to capture and each is unique. I never tire of viewing the receding mountains. Thanks for sharing... Mike

Thanks for stopping by and offering critique. Peter- I'm afraid my friends have long since tired of my photographic efforts! I agree that this sort of scene has been captuered many times. To me, arriving at this location for the first time, it was fresh and new. (I was actually trying to capture an impression of the fire in the right hand side of the middle ground. I could swear there was a plume of smoke in the view finder!) Cliche I think is in the eye of the beholder; for example, your Dublin portfolio, apart from the ' Bring more Lens' shot, which I have praised before, falls mainly into the ' old standard' category for me. This may be because I walk those streets daily, and is certainly not meant to be dismissive ....

Overall though, I agree. The image must stand on its own merits, and this kind of shot is hardly unique. I fully accept your critique in the spirit it was intended, and will endeavour to find new aspects to familiar scenes. Thanks again for looking and offering a considered and honest opinion.

My 2 euro cent worth!

James, I did mean to also say that your shot is the BEST of any I've see like it (receding contours of hills). I got into that line of argument because it is something I have to deal with all the time in landscapes. I can see from the positive responses you've gotten that you've carried forward a compelling emotion in the progression of shades of blue. My remarks to the contrary are probably only an opinion of one.

Also, you are very right about my Dublin folder, but wish I had interested you with my Temple Bar at night shot.

Peter- believe me, the contrary opinion is always the one that most interests me. I think your critique is spot on, and I will take it on board. I do struggle to find interesting and different takes on landscape photography. I'm at the stage where decent focus and exposure is a plus. I didn't mean to imply that your photos weren't good, or interesting (for what it's worth, i think they are) Again, maybe (when younger) I've spent to0 many evenings in Temple Bar looking at the stars .... And that shot of the model and the mural, Ive been at that spot many times and never seen the potential for such a photo.
