Land of the Lost - Kalalau Valley

harrylichtman

Seeing this iconic valley 1st hand is one of those moments lke viewing the Tetons for the ist time. A big Wow! My first glimpse of the valley was quite dissapointing - shrowded in mist and clouds for hours. I waited and waited and it paid off. The clouds lifted toward sunset and revealed a landcape which was completely new to me and unlike anything I'd ever seen. Fillflash was used.

Wonderful scene, the ferns in the foreground are a perfect compliment to the incredible cliffs. And some stellar light to top it off of course!

Aloha Harry! I have been at this spot, standing right where your camera was, but the atmosphere was not as clear. You caught the moment just at the right time, with the clouds allowing enough sunshine through to make this special. Nice work! Regards.

Stunning image! Beautiful colors, composition, clarity and light. I was drawn to this because I recognized it as being from Hawaii even though I haven't been to Kauai myself yet. I will be in Maui in a few days barring flight cancellations and was there last year. Anyway... I did check out the rest of your portfolios and I'm very impressed with your work! Your passion for your subjects is very obvious!! I was particularly impressed with your Closer to Heart and Home series. It really tugs at the ole heartstrings!

This is beautifully composed and the colors are great throughout most of the photo. The green cloud on the upper right and along the top don't look so great, but the rest of the photo is very well done.

Hi Daniel - I took a look and see what you mean. My only explanation is that the grean from the cliffs behind is visible through the thin clouds at the bottom. As I look toward the left of the clouds, there is no green where there is no cliff. Higher up in the cloud above the "green cloud" there doesn't seem to be any green, so I'm thinking it must be cliff peaking through.

Exqusite light + the shadows bring out the nice contours of the undulating hills, framed beautifully by the fg foliage.

I, too, noticed the green color cast in the clouds when I first visited this photograph but it did not bother me when I realized that it was indeed the color of the distant ridge showing through. I suppose one could do a very slight color correction in that area to whiten the clouds a bit, but it would be more of a judgement call than anything. Still a nice photograph! Regards.
