Charcoal Kilns, Death Valley National Park

Super capture. Great tonal ranges and really like the way you captured the sky. Couple of questions for you. About what time to you shoot? And how did I miss these? The way you shot them is terrific. I like the way the hives recede and your DOF is outstanding. Good Job Christal...RAY

I echo Ray's comments; you did a superb job, both in composition and exposure, but also in the black and white conversion. I can't believe that Ray and I missed these. Don't know if you shot any of the hives like this; but what about getting down really low to the ground and putting the tops of the kilns against the sky (and more importantly, above the ridgeline). You should see Ray and I; sometimes one or the other of us is fully laid out on the ground with the tripod legs spread wide and the camera mounted 6 inches above the ground. This would be such a place to try that technique. Well done, Christal; well done! Cheers! Chris

Thanks, guys. Yeah, these were really cool....worth the VERY long drive to see them. And this was another plus about not spending the day going to the Racetrack....you both know that story. As I approached the kilns, my first instinct was to start shooting, but there were some trees in the way kind of cluttering up things. So I went to the far end and shot back the other direction....it was late afternoon. And if you only knew how many times I THOUGHT about getting on the ground on this trip! Once I was attacked by fire ants doing that, so now I think twice. Also, this is an environment I'm not familiar with, so I don't know what else is lurking. I need to carry a pad or something, I guess. I'll leave it up to YOU to get that shot next time you go! :) Thanks for your comments!
