loic brohard 0 Posted April 17, 2008 Hi Christal, very nice photo of this nice place. Very good contrast with curves, lines and shadows. Well done, Loic Link to comment
paul gilmore 0 Posted April 17, 2008 Excellent shading and contrast of the subjects' textures. Would suggest cropping the foreground vegetation, and perhaps background mountain, leaving just dunes and eroded foothills. I'd like to see that photo, as well. Link to comment
Christal1664882414 0 Posted April 18, 2008 Thank you for your comments. Paul, I will try your suggestion as soon as I have the opportunity. I left the mountain in the background because I was trying to keep a sense of scale. But perhaps your suggestion will work better. I'm always willing to try different ideas. Thanks! Link to comment
lonebearimages 0 Posted April 18, 2008 I'm gonna be the contrarian to Paul's suggestion to crop some from the top and bottom. Personally, IMHO, I wouldn't touch this; this is spot-on. That little strip of saltbush in the FG is important to anchor the curves and lines of the dune field; then the eye moves up to the eroded hills behind the dunes, and then into the broad bajada outwash from the mountains in the background. There's a lot of interconnectedness and complementary layering here that is very important to the composition. Finally, Christal; the exposure is perfect, with wonderful tones, colors, and contrasts. This is one of your best landscapes so far! Well seen and captured (don't crop this!). Cheers! Chris Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted April 18, 2008 The curves and lines make for a most attractive photo. Very nice! Link to comment
Christal1664882414 0 Posted April 24, 2008 It's been awhile, so you may not see this. But I tried your suggestion, and I'm posting it here. I think I like the layers and textures of the original, but this is also a nice version. But see what you think. Thanks for your suggestion! Link to comment
paul gilmore 0 Posted May 4, 2008 Thnaks for asking. I also prefer the original photo. The cropped picture evokes a purer, more visceral statement of contrast, but seems too surreal. Paul Link to comment
lonebearimages 0 Posted May 5, 2008 I concur, the original is absolutely wonderful! Christal, it really is one of your very best from DVNP. This is a photograph that you and Norm should consider enlarging and hanging on a wall; it is quintessential Death Valley. Just gorgeous! Cheers! Chris Link to comment
pnital 36 Posted May 21, 2008 Christal, looking again in some of your files , and seeing the suggestions made to this photo ,I think Chris is right, and it is very nice as is, because it gives a better idea what the valley is , in its geological formation, the varairty is beautiful, It looks like a different layers of formation . The way you have composed it, the light and shadows play, the general perspective and the different colors and shapes is what makes this photo interesting. Link to comment
tidris 0 Posted March 9, 2009 I came by this photo just wandering around the PN site and boy am I glad I saw this. It is one of the finest landscapes that I have seen in a while on many levels and in many respects, most of which have been covered by the comments above. I am just in awe of such a great shot. Best wishes. Taha Link to comment
elportebonheur 0 Posted October 6, 2010 You're juggling with lights and shadows on this one! I like the harmony in tones as I like the sharpness - all in all: amazing work. Compliments! Link to comment

Christal1664882414 0 Posted April 26, 2013 Hey, thanks a lot! When I saw that it had 5 votes, I wondered if you might be one of them. :-) Yeah, it fits the theme of 'Earth' quite well, but so do many of the other images entered. We'll see. Link to comment
