Hi PN friends,

This pic is not sharp and not impresive for me. I need technical

suggestion to improve my shots. Shot at ISO-200, f10, 1/400, 55mm,

centre weighted, cloudy, MF.

I am not happy with this outcome. Please suggest me where to

correct.

This is a nice composition! However, there are a few suggestions I would like to make:

1. You could brighten up the picture by filling in some more light. I've tried doing that myself and attached my version.

2. The title of the picture does not take the eye of the viewer to the detail it denotes. The viewer might find it hard to get to the particular detail either because of the gloomy atmosphere or because of the smallness of the detail in the large picture. One thing you can try would be to crop the picture out to bring out the detail however that means losing many other details of the shot. The other thing would be to take the picture from a different angle altogether accentuating the subject with a vast background.

I hope I've been helpful!

Best regards,

Thanks for the tips, attached looks better. Yes, you are right, the caption is not suited for this shot as it is very very small in the frame. Apart from these, my another question is sharpness, how to get razor sharpness in these kind of shots. Here I have not used tripod, and I agree it will help to maximum extent.

I appreciate your effort and time.

Anand

I agree with Vamsi --- the original is too dark. But the composition is nice. Anand, have you tried cropping the edge of the road in the left? i wonder if that'd be better. regards -koushik

The tech specs of this shot seem to give me a direct indication of a thoroughly underexposed shot. I'm assuming it was shot on a gloomy day without too much ambient light. In such a case, always try to overexpose the shot. IMO, 1/400 shutter speed is way too much at ISO-200 and a small aperture of F/10. You can overexpose either by decreasing the shutter speed or by increasing the aperture (decreasing the f number). One other thing you could try is to use the bracketing feature. This feature allows you to take upto 3 shots with different exposure values; usually one normal exposure, one overexposured shot and one underexposed shot. So, you have a choice of picking up the best exposed one.

You can try two things in order to get sharp pictures : 1. use a tripod (which is not possible if you're inside an automobile and you happen to see a composition) and 2. increase the shutterspeed. You can get higher shutterspeeds at higher ISO numbers however, noise also increases correspondingly. Some Nikons have in-camera noise reduction technology which minimizes noise considerably however, you might wanna use a noise reduction program (usually available on the net) once you take the shot. You can also get higher shutter speeds at high apertures too. In such a case your lens should have a high aperture value (low F number).

All in all, it's still quite okay to underexpose a shot since you can correct exposure by filling in light using free picture editing programs again. You also can saturate or desaturate colours and adjust sharpness. However, correcting an overexposed shot is much harder.

I hope the information has been helpful.
